PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — The man who led Wawa for more than 55 years has died.

Dick Wood Jr. served as president, CEO and chairman as the convenience store chain grew to become a household name in the Philadelphia area, and then added gas stations, 24-7 service and expanded to 900 stores across six states.

His great-grandfather opened the Wawa Dairy in 1902.

Wood was also a proud philanthropist, with a particular commitment to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

He died Friday at the age of 88.
