This shining city
And the siren song
Of introspection
Calls me out
Into crooked evening streets
Free and finding my own feet
Regaining balance
Up winding lanes
Through unkempt parks
And haunted woodland
Night gathers its mass
The further I get from home
Pushing my lungs
To feel the incline
Towards a hilltop
Where I’ve perched before
A hundred soulless Saturdays
A wash of stolen Sundays
Lost in awe and wordless wonder
Caught in the vastness
Weighting up my lot
My unfurling world
A kaleidoscope of colour
Partner slowly retreating
Fingers slipping from my grip
With every broken parting
Into the safety of that chamber
The echo of slow heartbreak
These city lights
This beauty at night
Will call me back
One day I’ll return
When the search is done
And who’ll sit with me
On dusk benches
High on the wonder
And sparkling glow
Of this treasure chest
Spilled wide
Golden below
And who’ll sit with me
These city lights
These city lights will
These city lights will one
These city lights will one day
Call me back
Again…
