Adam Wingard’s Onslaught is coming in hot, and it just picked up an R rating for strong bloody violence, grisly images, language throughout, and some sexual references. If you were hoping Wingard would hold back, it doesn’t sound like that’s happening.
The upcoming A24 action horror film reunites Wingard with longtime collaborator Dan Stevens, and that’s only added fuel to a fan theory that’s been circulating ever since the first trailer dropped. Many horror fans are convinced Onslaught could somehow be connected to The Guest, the cult favorite Wingard and writer Simon Barrett released back in 2014.
So, is it?
According to star Rebecca Hall, not exactly.
When asked about the comparisons, Hall said she doesn’t believe Onslaught is a sequel to The Guest, though she admitted it shares some similar elements. She stopped short of saying much more, playfully dodging additional questions and leaving fans with just enough mystery to keep the speculation alive.
Onslaught In Theaters September 4, 2026
Whether it’s connected or not, Onslaught certainly has the right people behind it. Simon Barrett returns to write the screenplay alongside Wingard, continuing one of horror’s most successful creative partnerships. Together they’ve given fans You’re Next, The Guest, and Blair Witch, making this one of the year’s most anticipated genre releases.
The film stars Adria Arjona, Dan Stevens, Rebecca Hall, Michael Biehn, Drew Starkey, Reginald VelJohnson, Eric Wareheim, and UFC champion Alex Pereira.
The story follows a former Army sniper forced to protect her daughter after genetically engineered super soldiers escape from a secret military facility. Stevens plays the scientist tied to the experiment, while Michael Biehn leads the team sent in to stop the chaos.
With an R rating now officially locked in and excitement continuing to build, Onslaught looks ready to deliver the brutal action and horror fans have been hoping for.
Onslaught hits theaters on September 4, 2026.
