NJ weather: Heavy rain triggers flash flooding in Camden for second time this week

CAMDEN, N.J. (WPVI) — Another round of heavy rain swept through Camden on Thursday, flooding several roads, stranding drivers and renewing concerns just days after a similar storm caused widespread damage earlier in the week.

June Irizarry said he was driving near 10th Street and Kaighn Avenue when rising water overtook the roadway.

“Aggravated as hell. Lots of money,” he said. Irizarry described the experience as feeling “like I was driving through the ocean.”

Angel Lopez, owner of Kingz Towing, arrived to help Irizarry.

“The water was up to the steering wheel. It’s definitely a scary situation, especially when his windows wouldn’t go down any further. Thank God it stopped filling up,” Lopez said.

The city deployed its new highwater rescue vehicle to assist residents.

Camden Fire Chief Jesse Flax said crews helped two people who attempted to drive through deep water.

Camden hit by severe flash flooding Monday

“They are OK; we got them to dry land, but their car’s not,” he said.

Some drivers managed to navigate the flooded streets near 2nd and Pine, while others reversed course to avoid getting stuck.

Lopez noted that Thursday’s flooding was less severe than Monday’s storm. “The last rain storm was definitely a lot worse,” he said.

Camden County and city officials said they were better prepared this time around.

Dan Keashen, the director of Camden County public affairs, said crews worked throughout the day.

“We’ve planned for this. We’ve had crews all day long on major thoroughfares, cleared inlets. When the water gets in, it gets out as soon as possible,” he said.

Crews were seen removing debris from sewers to help drain streets and reduce flooding as the storm moved through.
