Maomao and Jinshi Go On a Trip in Trailer for The Apothecary Diaries Movie

The upcoming The Apothecary Diaries anime film has received a trailer and a teaser visual, as well as details like its Bohi no Hiho (Hidden Treasure of the Dead Consort) subtitle and December 11 release date. 

There are also visuals previewing Maomao and Jinshi‘s outfits for the movie, as well as the new character Muchin, who is voiced by Mariya Ise.

The Apothecary Diaries the Movie: Bohi no Hiho (Gekijoban Kusuriya no Hitorigoto Bohi no Hiho) sees Jinshi being ordered to deliver the remains of a consort who died five years ago to her hometown. However, an examination reveals that the body is so well-preserved that the consort looks to be merely sleeping, prompting Jinshi to bring Maomao along to solve the mystery. Their journey takes them to a floating city, where a major incident occurs on the day of the consort’s funeral.

Unlike the series, TOHO animation STUDIO isn’t sharing the animation production credit with OLM. 

Plans for more The Apothecary Diaries anime were announced in July 2025 after the conclusion of Season 2. October 2025 revealed that there would be a third season with two split cours (one premiering in October 2026 and the other following in April 2027) as well as a December 2026 film with an original story from creator Natsu Hyuga.

Hyuga’s Shufunotomo-published light novel series, which began in 2014., follows the young Maomao as she is whisked off to the rear palace, where she uses the knowledge gained from her apothecary adoptive father and her smarts to navigate its complicated relationships and problems. Aoi Yuki voices Maomao in the anime, while Takeo Otsuka is Jinshi, first introduced as a formidable eunuch who takes an interest in Maomao.

Toko Shino illustrates the books, which are published under the Hero Bunko label and have 16 volumes as of 2025. There are two manga, one published by Square Enix and the other by Shogakukan. 

The Apothecary Diaries started as a web novel on Shosetsuka ni Naro in 2011. The light novels are available in English digitally from J-Novel Club and in print from Square Enix.

The anime’s first season premiered in 2023, while the first sequel season began airing in January 2025. Unlike the upcoming Season 3, both were consecutive-cour series.
