“I want a genuine human experience.”
Back in December, it was announced that M3GAN spin-off SOULM8TE had been pulled from the release schedule by Universal Pictures.
This came after Blumhouse Productions undertook a “creative re-think,” following several critical and financial flops. Among them was M3GAN 2.0, a movie both entities had high hopes for.
In the months that followed, word came that Universal had no interest in continuing M3GAN as a brand, and were shopping SOULM8TE to other distributors.
However, it appears they have changed their mind, as the spin-off will finally be seeing a release this August.
The catch is, SOULM8TE will skip theatres entirely, instead being released directly to video-on-demand services.
The movie stars horror alums Lily Sullivan and David Rysdahl, as the latter seeks the “perfect” female companion following a break-up. He acquires Sara, an AI-driven life-like android, and sets to work making her the partner of his dreams.
However, Sara soon grows alarmingly attached to her owner, and seemingly will do anything to have him to herself.
Described as “a 90s erotic thriller with a sci-fi twist,” SOULM8TE comes to us from filmmaker Kate Dolan. Dolan penned the script alongside Rafael Jordan, from an original idea from filmmaker James Wan.
Wan produces under his Atomic Monster label, alongside Jason Blum of Blumhouse.
SOULM8TE is set to make its digital debut on August 1 2026, and you can check out the trailer below:
