The upcoming Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Walpurgisnacht Rising anime film has received a main trailer. The nearly two-minute preview features the newly announced FictionJunction theme song “Kanata” and delves deeper into the sequel’s story.
Early in the main trailer, Mami can be heard bringing up the topic of non-magical girls who are able to transform. Later, the trailer introduces a space called Nazukasokozun, which Kyubey describes as the place of beginning for all magical girls.
The preview delivers more intrigue with a snippet from what seems to be a conversation between the two new magical girl characters, Shichoka and Selma Therese, and Madoka, with the newcomers speaking of the Law of Cycles and Madoka’s role in it. Later, a voice declares that “We won’t forgive Homura Akemi.”
Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Walpurgisnacht Rising will debut in Japanese theaters on August 28. It is the follow up to the 2013 film Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Rebellion, which served as a sequel to the 2011 dark magical girl TV anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica. The general setting of Puella Magi Madoka Magica sees young girls making contracts with the enigmatic creature Kyubey, becoming magical girls to fight frightening Witches in exchange for having a wish fulfilled, while unaware of the dark truths involved.
The new movie was announced in April 2021 and had winter 2024 and winter 2025 as its previous release windows.
The Puella Magi Madoka Magica franchise includes the now-defunct Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story gacha game, its 2025 successor Madoka Magica: Magia Exedra, and a Magia Record TV anime.
