A pre-broadcast trailer for the Though I Am an Inept Villainess TV anime has been released ahead of its July 12 broadcast start. The new trailer came with the reveal of Rokudenashi as the artist for the ending song, “Hokiboshi.”
Though I Am an Inept Villainess (Futsutsuka na Akujo dewa Gozaimasuga ~ Sugu Choso Torikae den~) is an adaptation of the light novel series written by Satsuki Nakamura and illustrated by Kana Yuki. Seven Seas Entertainment describes the books’ synopsis as such:
In the Kingdom of Ei, five clans put forth their maidens as imperial consorts—but only one will be crowned empress. Just when frail and beautiful “court butterfly” Kou Reirin seems poised to marry the crown prince, jealous “court rat” Shu Keigetsu steals her body! Reirin wakes up in the dungeons as the conspirator, and things look dire…or do they? Now that she’s got a robust new body, not even the looming threat of execution can stop her!
Mitsue Yamazaki (Zenshu, Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle) is directing the anime at Doga Kobo with Sumie Noro as assistant director, Yoshiko Nakamura (RPG Real Estate) as series composer and Ai Kikuchi (Shikimori’s Not Just A Cutie) as character designer. Manaka Iwami is Kou Reirin, while Natsumi Kawaida voices Shu Keigetsu.
Crunchyroll will stream the anime, which was previously planned to begin airing in April.
The Though I Am an Inept Villainess light novel series, which is published under the Ichijinsha Novels label, began in 2020 and has 12 volumes as of March 2026. There is a manga by Ei Ohitsuji, who is credited as original character designer on the anime alongside Yuki.
