{"id":36911,"date":"2026-07-16T03:13:30","date_gmt":"2026-07-16T07:13:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/design-providers.com\/rise\/world-news-in-brief-schools-closed-in-west-bank-ai-in-healthcare-indigenous-rights\/"},"modified":"2026-07-16T03:13:30","modified_gmt":"2026-07-16T07:13:30","slug":"world-news-in-brief-schools-closed-in-west-bank-ai-in-healthcare-indigenous-rights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/design-providers.com\/rise\/world-news-in-brief-schools-closed-in-west-bank-ai-in-healthcare-indigenous-rights\/","title":{"rendered":"World News in Brief: Schools closed in West Bank, AI in healthcare, Indigenous rights"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>For more than a year,\u00a0<strong>six schools\u00a0established\u00a0by the\u00a0<\/strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unrwa.org\/\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.unrwa.org\/\"><strong>UN Relief and Works Agency<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0(UNRWA)\u00a0have been inaccessible, and another six have been closed, <\/strong>UN Spokesperson\u00a0St\u00e9phane Dujarric <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/en\/content\/noon-briefing-highlight\">told journalists<\/a> in New York.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ten schools in Area C of the West Bank were recently abandoned due to settler attacks and access restrictions,\u00a0he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Suzanna Tkalec, the UN\u2019s deputy humanitarian coordinator for the\u00a0Occupied Palestinian Territory, led a joint humanitarian mission to a former UN school in Gaza currently hosting 18 displaced families.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr.\u00a0Dujarric said\u00a0that\u00a0according to the UN aid\u00a0coordination\u00a0office,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unocha.org\/\">OCHA<\/a>,\u00a0<strong>those families\u2019 living conditions have been undermined by a lack of access to humanitarian aid<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur humanitarian partners are committed to mobilizing assistance to address the community\u2019s most urgent needs,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Aid reaches thousands in the Occupied Palestinian Territory<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Even as the Israeli military continues to strike Gaza and launch raids into the West Bank,\u00a0<strong>humanitarian workers continue to provide lifesaving\u00a0assistance<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The UN\u2019s partner organizations have distributed more than 378,000 items, including tarpaulins, cleaning kits and jerrycans to civilians in Gaza in the past month.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the West Bank, the UN\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wfp.org\/\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.wfp.org\/\">World Food Programme (WFP)<\/a>\u00a0provided food vouchers and cash assistance to about\u00a0286,000 people\u00a0in June.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The UN is concerned, however, that\u00a0<strong>the required supplies may not be available\u00a0<\/strong>by<strong>\u00a0the winter season\u00a0without increased support<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout additional funding, depleted stockpiles cannot be replenished, putting vulnerable families at even greater risk, particularly as humanitarians prepare for winter,\u201d Mr. Dujarric said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                  <span class=\"author\">\u00a9 WHO\/Uka Borregaard<\/span><br \/>\n                          <span class=\"caption\">The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in health care across Europe is rapidly evolving.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>WHO urges countries to develop health-specific AI regulations<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Artificial intelligence (AI) governance strategies must ensure the technology remedies health inequities in access and treatment, rather than amplifying them,\u00a0the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/\">World Health Organization (WHO)<\/a>\u00a0said\u00a0on Wednesday in a\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/europe\/news\/item\/15-07-2026-who-brings-37-countries-together-in-lisbon-to-get-ai-governance-right-and-make-it-work-for-every-patient\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/europe\/news\/item\/15-07-2026-who-brings-37-countries-together-in-lisbon-to-get-ai-governance-right-and-make-it-work-for-every-patient\">press release<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The warning comes as the UN continues its push to bring Member States together around global AI governance. The <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/en\/\">WHO<\/a> and the Government of Portugal kicked off\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/europe\/news-room\/events\/item\/2026\/07\/15\/default-calendar\/global-who-conference--shaping-ai-in-health\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/europe\/news-room\/events\/item\/2026\/07\/15\/default-calendar\/global-who-conference--shaping-ai-in-health\">a high-level conference<\/a>\u00a0in Lisbon on Wednesday, hosting government representatives from 37 countries across all six WHO regions to share strategies for responsible AI use in healthcare.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/iris.who.int\/server\/api\/core\/bitstreams\/ae3fcbfc-b6a0-4aad-a0b3-35027b451648\/content\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/iris.who.int\/server\/api\/core\/bitstreams\/ae3fcbfc-b6a0-4aad-a0b3-35027b451648\/content\">an April report<\/a>, the WHO found that 74 per cent of\u00a0European Union (EU)\u00a0Member States already used AI to assist with diagnostics, but\u00a0<strong>only 11 per cent had a health-specific AI strategy and just eight per cent had liability standards for AI in case something goes wrong<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery country in the world is wrestling with the same questions right now: how do we govern AI responsibly, how do we build the health workforce to use it safely, and how do we make sure it serves patients rather than just those who can afford the technology,\u201d said Dr. Hans Kluge, WHO regional director for Europe.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Regulation push prioritizes patients<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p>In the press release, Dr. Kluge said part of the reason AI regulation is so urgent is that patients are already using chatbots to ask about their symptoms.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cRegulating AI in health is hard,\u201d he said. \u201cBut not regulating it is harder \u2013 measured in patients harmed, trust lost and inequalities widened.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The WHO released\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/iris.who.int\/server\/api\/core\/bitstreams\/f780d926-4ae3-42ce-a6d6-e898a5562621\/content\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/iris.who.int\/server\/api\/core\/bitstreams\/f780d926-4ae3-42ce-a6d6-e898a5562621\/content\">guidance on the ethical use of AI<\/a>\u00a0in healthcare in 2021, focusing on how it can be used safely and ethically to advance the interests of patients and communities\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A key focus of the conference is to develop strategies to ensure that patients with less access to the healthcare system and to technology are not left behind as countries and providers adopt AI tools\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>No country should have to navigate the AI transformation transition to clean energy must not come at the cost of Indigenous Peoples\u2019 rights, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/about-us\/high-commissioner\">UN human rights chief<\/a>\u00a0Volker T\u00fcrk\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/statements-and-speeches\/2026\/07\/turk-says-respect-indigenous-peoples-rights-essential-resolve\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/statements-and-speeches\/2026\/07\/turk-says-respect-indigenous-peoples-rights-essential-resolve\">said on Wednesday<\/a>\u00a0at the 19th session of the UN-appointed\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/hrc-subsidiaries\/expert-mechanism-on-indigenous-peoples\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/hrc-subsidiaries\/expert-mechanism-on-indigenous-peoples\">Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Indigenous rights defenders often face intimidation, harassment, violence,\u00a0criminalisation\u00a0and prosecution, especially as they defend their land from development projects such as mining and large-scale agriculture.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Between 2023 and 2025,\u00a0<strong>at least 15 per cent of the human rights defenders killed or forcibly disappeared around the world were Indigenous\u00a0Persons<\/strong>, according to the human rights chief.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr.\u00a0T\u00fcrk\u00a0highlighted the case of Brooklyn Rivera, an Indigenous leader in Nicaragua who died in state custody in\u00a0May, and\u00a0called for all Member States to respect Indigenous rights.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He also highlighted recent successes such as an Indigenous group in Australia that in May secured record compensation for mining conducted without their consent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Indigenous Peoples\u2019 rights are not theoretical aspirations for the future; they are obligations for the present, now<\/strong>,\u201d Mr.\u00a0T\u00fcrk\u00a0said. \u201cAnd wherever those rights are respected, all of society becomes more just, more peaceful and more resilient.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Highlighting Indigenous contributions<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p>Indigenous Peoples around the world lead efforts on biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, resource management,\u00a0peacebuilding\u00a0and human rights.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDurable peace requires inclusion, justice, meaningful participation at every stage and recognition of rights,\u201d\u00a0he\u00a0said. \u201cAnd this must involve recognition of Indigenous Peoples\u2019 rights to self-determination and to control over their lands.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Majority populations have historically dispossessed Indigenous communities of land and resources, denied them self-determination, degraded their environments, and threatened their governance systems and cultures,\u00a0human rights chief\u00a0noted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr.\u00a0T\u00fcrk\u00a0urged Member States to support the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/about-us\/funding-budget\/indigenous-peoples-fund\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/about-us\/funding-budget\/indigenous-peoples-fund\">UN Voluntary Fund for Indigenous Peoples<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/globalalliance.un.org\/\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/globalalliance.un.org\/\">Global
