{"id":36612,"date":"2026-07-15T10:41:16","date_gmt":"2026-07-15T14:41:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/design-providers.com\/rise\/childhood-vaccination-rate-increases-slightly-but-millions-remain-unprotected\/"},"modified":"2026-07-15T10:41:17","modified_gmt":"2026-07-15T14:41:17","slug":"childhood-vaccination-rate-increases-slightly-but-millions-remain-unprotected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/design-providers.com\/rise\/childhood-vaccination-rate-increases-slightly-but-millions-remain-unprotected\/","title":{"rendered":"Childhood vaccination rate increases slightly, but millions remain unprotected"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The annual\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/teams\/immunization-vaccines-and-biologicals\/immunization-analysis-and-insights\/global-monitoring\/immunization-coverage\/who-unicef-estimates-of-national-immunization-coverage\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/teams\/immunization-vaccines-and-biologicals\/immunization-analysis-and-insights\/global-monitoring\/immunization-coverage\/who-unicef-estimates-of-national-immunization-coverage\">WHO-UNICEF Estimates of National Immunization Coverage<\/a>\u00a0reveal\u00a0<strong>90 per cent of infants worldwide received at least one dose of the diphtheria,\u00a0tetanus\u00a0and pertussis<\/strong>\u00a0(DTP) vaccine last year, while\u00a0<strong>85 per cent completed the recommended three-dose series<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Although both figures increased by one percentage point from 2024, global vaccination coverage\u00a0remains\u00a0below pre-pandemic levels.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Missing lifesaving vaccines<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>An\u00a0<strong>estimated\u00a013.5 million children\u00a0received no vaccines at all during their first year of life in 2025<\/strong>. While that marks a decline of\u00a0nearly 750,000\u00a0&#8220;zero-dose&#8221; children compared with the previous year, millions\u00a0remain\u00a0beyond the reach of health services.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, more children are beginning vaccination schedules but\u00a0failing to complete\u00a0them, increasing the risk of disease outbreaks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGovernments and health workers have helped global vaccination rates bounce back after dropping significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/who-we-are\/executive-director\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/who-we-are\/executive-director\">UNICEF Executive Director<\/a>\u00a0Catherine Russell.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut millions of vulnerable children are still\u00a0being left\u00a0unprotected due to conflict,\u00a0displacement\u00a0and poverty. We must reach every child, and we must rebuild trust where it is fraying.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                  <span class=\"author\">\u00a9 UNICEF<\/span><br \/>\n                          <span continue<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>The report highlights growing concern over measles, one of the world&#8217;s most contagious diseases.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Globally, 84 per cent of children received their first measles vaccine dose in 2025 and 77 per cent received the second,\u00a0<strong>well below the 95 per cent coverage needed to prevent outbreaks<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As a result, 57 countries reported major or disruptive measles outbreaks last year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Conflict and hesitancy widen gaps<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>More than half of all zero-dose children live in fragile or conflict-affected countries, where immunization\u00a0programmes\u00a0are often disrupted by insecurity, political\u00a0instability\u00a0and underfunding.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Syria saw sharp declines in vaccination coverage during 2025, while Sudan recorded one of the world&#8217;s largest improvements,\u00a0demonstrating\u00a0that immunization rates can recover even in conflict settings when access to health services expands.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/en\/\">WHO<\/a> also warned that vaccination rates are slipping in some middle- and high-income countries despite vaccines being readily available, citing vaccine hesitancy, weakening political commitment and other structural challenges.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Funding concerns<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/director-general\/tedros-adhanom-ghebreyesus\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/director-general\/tedros-adhanom-ghebreyesus\">WHO Director-General<\/a>\u00a0Tedros called vaccines one of the most effective and\u00a0equitable\u00a0public health interventions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Every child, whether born into wealth or poverty, peace or conflict, deserves the life-giving protection that vaccines provide<\/strong>,\u201d\u00a0he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The agencies also warned that recent cuts to international health financing could undermine future progress.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fewer countries carried out national immunization surveys in 2025, limiting the ability to\u00a0identify\u00a0children who are missing vaccines and respond quickly to\u00a0emerging\u00a0outbreaks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>WHO and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/\">UNICEF<\/a> called on governments and international partners to strengthen vaccination\u00a0programmes\u00a0in fragile settings, combat misinformation, increase funding and invest in stronger disease surveillance systems to prevent further setbacks.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The
