{"id":36460,"date":"2026-07-15T00:40:30","date_gmt":"2026-07-15T04:40:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/design-providers.com\/rise\/hunted-by-drones-un-reports-worst-month-for-ukraines-civilians-since-2022\/"},"modified":"2026-07-15T00:40:30","modified_gmt":"2026-07-15T04:40:30","slug":"hunted-by-drones-un-reports-worst-month-for-ukraines-civilians-since-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/design-providers.com\/rise\/hunted-by-drones-un-reports-worst-month-for-ukraines-civilians-since-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Hunted\u2019 by drones: UN reports worst month for Ukraine\u2019s civilians since 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>At least 293 civilians were killed and 1,990 injured in June, making it\u00a0<strong>the deadliest month for civilians since April 2022<\/strong>, according to its latest\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ukraine.ohchr.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2026-07\/Ukraine%20-%20protection%20of%20civilians%20in%20armed%20conflict%20June%20and%20the%20first%20six%20months%20of%202026_ENG.pdf\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/ukraine.ohchr.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2026-07\/Ukraine%20-%20protection%20of%20civilians%20in%20armed%20conflict%20June%20and%20the%20first%20six%20months%20of%202026_ENG.pdf\">update.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>May had already recorded the highest number of civilian casualties in more than four years, with 282 killed and 1,794 injured,\u00a0but June surpassed it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Growing risks<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThe figures show\u00a0<strong>an alarming escalatory trend with mounting civilian\u00a0toll<\/strong>, driven by the intensifying use of powerful weapons that are particularly deadly when used in densely populated urban areas,\u201d\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ukraine.ohchr.org\/en\/Civilian-Casualties-Soar-in-Ukraine-in-the-First-Half-of-2026-Amid-Escalating-Attacks-and-Intensifying-Use-of-Deadly-Weapons-UN-Human-Rights-Monitors-Say\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/ukraine.ohchr.org\/en\/Civilian-Casualties-Soar-in-Ukraine-in-the-First-Half-of-2026-Amid-Escalating-Attacks-and-Intensifying-Use-of-Deadly-Weapons-UN-Human-Rights-Monitors-Say\">said<\/a>\u00a0Danielle Bell, the HRMMU head.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis trend should serve as a warning that\u00a0<strong>the risks facing civilians are not only persisting but growing in both scale and complexity<\/strong>,\u201d she added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During the first six months of 2026,\u00a0monitors verified\u00a01,396 civilians\u00a0killed\u00a0and 7,978\u00a0injured\u00a0\u2013\u00a0a\u00a037 per cent rise over the same period in 2025 and a 114 per cent increase compared with 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Deadly missile and drone attacks<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0increase was\u00a0largely driven\u00a0by\u00a0use\u00a0of long-range weapons\u00a0\u2013\u00a0powerful\u00a0missiles with area-wide effects as well as drones\u00a0\u2013\u00a0mainly\u00a0in\u00a0urban\u202fcentres\u202ffar from the frontline, such as\u00a0the capital\u00a0Kyiv and\u00a0the city of\u00a0Dnipro.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Between January and June, civilian casualties from\u00a0such\u00a0attacks\u00a0increased by 60 per cent compared with 2025.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, short-range drones\u00a0were responsible for\u00a0most of the civilian deaths and injuries in areas near the frontline, which reached their highest monthly levels ever in June\u00a0with 89 killed and 588 injured.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>\u2018Shooting and striking day and night\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cShort-range drones have transformed the environment for civilians living near the frontline. The accounts we hear from civilians displaced from frontline communities are deeply consistent \u2013 and terrifying,\u201d said Ms. Bell.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Many describe feeling hunted by short-range drones simply for attempting everyday tasks such as shopping for food, walking dogs, cycling<\/strong>, working in the yard or travelling to safety.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The monitors spoke to an older woman who was recently evacuated from the frontline village of\u00a0Preobrazhenka\u00a0in the Zaporizhzhia region.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were drones everywhere. Everything was flying overhead. I did not know where to hide,\u201d she said. \u201cThere is terrible fear out there. They are shooting and striking day and night.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Areas under attack<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Most\u00a0civilian casualties occurred in areas under the control of the Government of Ukraine,\u00a0and\u00a0across 13 regions and the city of Kyiv.\u00a0The UN\u00a0<strong>investigators also verified civilian casualties in occupied territory, although fewer compared to 2025<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Russia also reported rising civilian casualties on its territory in the first six months of\u00a0the year. Authorities said 250 civilians were killed and 1,596 injured, marking a 121 per cent increase compared with the same period in 2025.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Moscow\u00a0also\u00a0continued to attack Ukraine\u2019s energy infrastructure in June, according to the update,\u00a0which\u00a0also documented\u00a0<strong>a\u00a0sharp increase in Ukrainian attacks\u00a0against power generation,\u00a0distribution\u00a0and transmission facilities in occupied Crimea<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At\u00a0least 12\u00a0such attacks\u00a0resulted\u00a0in emergency or scheduled power outages.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Russia launched its\u00a0full-scale invasion\u00a0of Ukraine on 24 February 2022.\u00a0\u00a0Since then,\u202fUN\u00a0human rights\u00a0monitors\u00a0have\u00a0verified at least 16,431 civilians killed\u00a0and\u00a048,613 injured, with more than\u00a03,700\u00a0children\u00a0among the victims\u00a0\u2013 the likely toll is much higher given access
