{"id":36277,"date":"2026-07-14T14:06:45","date_gmt":"2026-07-14T18:06:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/design-providers.com\/rise\/contractor-drops-lien-against-haitian-restaurant-owner-in-brooklyn\/"},"modified":"2026-07-14T14:06:45","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T18:06:45","slug":"contractor-drops-lien-against-haitian-restaurant-owner-in-brooklyn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/design-providers.com\/rise\/contractor-drops-lien-against-haitian-restaurant-owner-in-brooklyn\/","title":{"rendered":"Contractor drops lien against Haitian restaurant owner in Brooklyn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"article-summary-title\">Overview:<\/h2>\n<p>General contractor Ed Mishan has withdrawn a $234,000 mechanic&#8217;s lien against Haitian restaurant owner Eva Volmar, easing one legal challenge while her dispute with her landlord continues in housing court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>BROOKLYN<\/strong> \u2014 One of the legal threats facing Haitian restaurant owner Eva Volmar has been removed after the contractor who filed a $234,000 mechanic\u2019s lien withdrew it, narrowing a dispute that continues to threaten the future of her Brooklyn restaurant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ed Mishan removed the lien on Monday, July 6, five days after <em>The Haitian Times<\/em> published its investigation into Volmar\u2019s restaurant, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/lacachetteducoin.restaurant\/\">La Cachette du Coin<\/a>, which included the mechanic\u2019s lien and her ongoing eviction case against her landlord.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sign up for our free newsletters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a phone interview that day, Mishan said he never wanted Volmar to lose her business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI always cared about Eva from day one,\u201d Mishan said. \u201cI\u2019m not looking for someone to lose their livelihood for a couple of hundred thousand dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lien put Volmar in violation of her lease, giving her landlord grounds for eviction.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Volmar said she believes the story prompted Mishan to reconsider.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe couldn\u2019t sleep after reading it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mishan also said the dispute \u201cwas not a racial thing\u201d and that he believed the earlier story gave the disagreement an unfair racial dimension.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy would the landlord sign a lease with a minority tenant only to push them out?\u201d Mishan said. \u201cThat doesn\u2019t make any sense to me as a human being. And I\u2019m not even talking about as a landlord, just as a human being.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said filing the lien \u201cwas just business,\u201d not personal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the article was published, Volmar said she has had support from both city officials and community advocates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kitty Chan, deputy commissioner at the Department of\u00a0 <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/sbs\/index.page\">Small Business Services<\/a>, contacted Volmar after reading the story and later met with her at La Cachette du Coin to discuss resources available to support her business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Activist Imani Henry of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.equalityforflatbush.org\/\">Equality for Flatbush<\/a>, who was quoted in the original story, also met with Volmar this week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s not happenstance,\u201d Henry said in an earlier interview with <em>The Haitian Times<\/em>. \u201cIt is a concerted effort to push out and displace largely black and brown tenants, homeowners, small businesses from New York City.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His organization plans to hold a rally outside La Cachette du Coin on July 21.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt has been a dream,\u201d Volmar said. \u201cEveryone read that article.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the lien\u2019s removal, Volmar\u2019s legal dispute with her landlord continues.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Landlord Nigel Boyden has filed a motion to dismiss her counterclaim in the eviction case.
