{"id":36149,"date":"2026-07-14T05:27:49","date_gmt":"2026-07-14T09:27:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/design-providers.com\/rise\/mike-flanagans-carrie-will-introduce-more-telekinetic-characters\/"},"modified":"2026-07-14T05:27:49","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T09:27:49","slug":"mike-flanagans-carrie-will-introduce-more-telekinetic-characters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/design-providers.com\/rise\/mike-flanagans-carrie-will-introduce-more-telekinetic-characters\/","title":{"rendered":"Mike Flanagan&#8217;s &#8216;Carrie&#8217; Will Introduce More Telekinetic Characters"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the biggest surprises to come out of Entertainment Weekly\u2019s extensive first look at <strong>Mike Flanagan<\/strong>\u2018s upcoming <em><strong>Carrie<\/strong><\/em> series isn\u2019t the casting, the first images, or even the October 2026 release window.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s the revelation that Flanagan isn\u2019t simply retelling <strong>Stephen King<\/strong>\u2018s classic novel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He\u2019s <em>expanding<\/em> it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/carrie-tv-series-first-look-mike-flanagan-modern-twist-exclusive-12015053\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"(opens in a new tab)\">EW<\/a>, <strong>the 8-episode Prime Video series will introduce <em>multiple<\/em> women from different time periods who possess telekinetic abilities<\/strong>, dramatically broadening the mythology established in King\u2019s original 1974 novel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStephen King also talks about the \u2018TK gene\u2019 [for telekinesis] and the science behind Carrie\u2019s abilities,\u201d Flanagan says. <strong>\u201cSomething that the De Palma adaptation ignored was Carrie\u2019s place in the larger universe, that she\u2019s part of a sorority of very gifted women and just doesn\u2019t know it. <\/strong>The book absolutely points at that, but that was something we could pick up and run with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beginning with episode 2, each installment of the season will, according to the showrunner, open with \u201ca different, unique story of a different woman, somewhere else in the world and in time, coming to terms with their own abilities.\u201d He notes, \u201cCarrie\u2019s specific place among that group of women is part of the real joy that we get to discover over the course of the season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a fascinating creative decision, and one that makes perfect sense for television.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than attempting to remake <strong>Brian De Palma<\/strong>\u2018s beloved 1976 adaptation, Flanagan has repeatedly said he wanted to create something new. As he told <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/carrie-tv-series-first-look-mike-flanagan-modern-twist-exclusive-12015053\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"(opens in a new tab)\">EW<\/a>, \u201cThe movie exists, and it\u2019s a masterpiece.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of competing with one of horror\u2019s most celebrated films, Flanagan appears to be asking a different question entirely: What if Carrie White wasn\u2019t the only person this ever happened to?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Misfit high\u2011schooler Carrie White (<strong>Summer Howell<\/strong>) has spent her life hidden away inside the walls of her home with her fiercely protective mother, Margaret (Samantha Sloyan). After her father\u2019s sudden, untimely death thrusts her into the unforgiving ecosystem of public high school, Carrie is forced to navigate a viral bullying scandal that tears through her community, the relentless pressure and casual cruelty of the social\u2011media age, and the awakening of mysterious telekinetic powers that rise alongside her adolescence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Samantha Sloyan<\/strong> (<em>The Fall of the House of Usher<\/em>), <strong>Siena Agudong<\/strong> (<em>Resident Evil<\/em>), <strong>Alison Thornton<\/strong> (<em>School Spirits<\/em>), <strong>Thalia Dudek<\/strong> (<em>The Irrational<\/em>), <strong>Josie Totah<\/strong> (<em>Saved by the Bell<\/em>), <strong>Arthur Conti<\/strong> (<em>House of the Dragon<\/em>), <strong>Joel Oulette<\/strong> (<em>Trickster<\/em>), <strong>Amber Midthunder<\/strong> (<em>Prey<\/em>), and <strong>Matthew Lillard<\/strong> (<em>Scream<\/em>) also star.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Flanagan serves as writer, showrunner, executive producer, and directs select episodes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether this expanded mythology ultimately works remains to be seen, but one thing is already clear: this isn\u2019t just another adaptation of <em>Carrie<\/em>.
