Sam Neill<\/strong> might not be the first name that pops into your head.<\/p>\nBut the truth is, he was one of the genre\u2019s legends.<\/p>\n
Most of us didn\u2019t really know who he was until Steven Spielberg<\/strong>\u2019s Jurassic Park<\/em><\/strong> in 1993, where he brought the unforgettable Dr. Alan Grant to life from Michael Crichton<\/strong>\u2019s bestselling novel.<\/p>\nBut before he was being chased across an island by dinosaurs, he starred in the cult masterpiece Possession<\/em><\/strong>, not to mention stepping into the role of Damien Thorn in Omen III: The Final Conflict<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\nAfter Jurassic Park<\/em>, he would go on to star in what I still consider one of the greatest science fiction horror films ever made, Paul W.S. Anderson<\/strong>\u2019s Event Horizon<\/em><\/strong>. Neill played Dr. William Weir, the brilliant scientist who boards a rescue mission to investigate a spaceship that had literally been to hell and back, only to discover that some doors should never be opened.<\/p>\nThe film itself has become one of horror\u2019s defining cult classics. It\u2019s also one of the genre\u2019s greatest tragedies, with much of its most graphic footage famously cut before release and ultimately lost forever. Horror fans have spent decades hoping those missing scenes would someday resurface, but sadly, they appear to be gone for good.<\/p>\n
And somehow I still almost forgot the one that hurts the most.<\/p>\n
Just a year before Jurassic Park<\/em>, Sam Neill<\/strong> starred in what I consider one of the greatest horror films ever made: John Carpenter<\/strong>\u2019s In the Mouth of Madness<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\nThe film follows an insurance investigator who travels to a small town in search of a missing horror author, only to discover that fiction and reality are beginning to collapse into one another. It\u2019s creepy, wildly entertaining, endlessly quotable, and somehow feels even more relevant today than it did in 1994. It\u2019s one of my five favorite horror movies of all time, and Neill\u2019s descent into madness is a huge reason why.<\/p>\n
Sometimes I still catch myself thinking, \u201cDo you read Sutter Cane?\u201d Or wondering if I\u2019m about to open my eyes and only see the color blue.<\/p>\n
Neill\u2019s career stretched across more than five decades and included everything from prestige dramas to blockbuster adventures, but horror was always one of the places where he quietly did some of his very best work.<\/p>\n
For me, though, it\u2019ll always come back to Jurassic Park<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\nI\u2019ve spent my entire life chasing the feeling I had sitting in that theater back in 1993. Maybe the only movie that\u2019s ever come close was Terminator 2: Judgment Day<\/em><\/strong>. Those weren\u2019t just movies. They were experiences. They were the kinds of films that completely changed how I looked at cinema.<\/p>\nDr. Alan Grant is a huge piece of that.<\/p>\n
He\u2019s one of the puzzle pieces that turned me into the obsessive movie fan I am today, and I have a feeling there are millions of people out there who can say exactly the same thing.<\/p>\n
Rest in peace, Sam Neill<\/strong>.<\/p>\nAnd thank you for helping inspire a lifetime of moviegoing.<\/p>\n
