If Bharathiraja\u00a0taught people how to look at villages, then it was certainly S. Janaki who taught them to listen to the women in these villages. She was the perfect\u00a0acoustic\u00a0accompaniment for Bharathiraja\u2019s vast rural landscapes.\u00a0There\u2019s\u00a0no scientific way of telling how this combination\u00a0dressed up\u00a0folklore as a living, breathing, urgent way of life through celluloid, but it would be safe to say they pulled off something there.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Janaki amma\u2019s voice gave contour to the\u00a0heroines, their fears, their desires, their\u00a0hopes\u00a0and their dreams, even as\u00a0Bharathiraja wrote them\u00a0lion\u2019s space on\u00a0the\u00a0screen.\u00a0Take the classic, much-feted\u00a016 Vayathinile\u00a0and the wonderful\u00a0Sendoora\u00a0Poove.\u00a0A young Sridevi is footloose and fancy free; she starts with\u00a0a lilt, and as the melody progresses, a mild, tender\u00a0eroticism\u00a0creeps in as the young girl asks the breeze to carry her message, not coyly or\u00a0hesitantly, but with a confidence that Janaki\u2019s voice lends to Mayilu\u2019s character. Like the director, Janaki\u00a0amma\u2019s singing\u00a0created a safe, legitimate space for female desire.\u00a0Even if they will be punished by the real world later.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
And when she sings for the women from the rural areas, Janaki made sure her voice had a timbre and grain that sat well on Illayaraja\u2019s earthy music and Bharathiraja\u2019s\u00a0visuals. The fullness of it gave the women the freedom that some of them on dreamt of, but a few also landed. With her incredible talent not just for singing but also performance,\u00a0just as her singing\u00a0partner\u00a0the late\u00a0S.P.Balasubrahmanyam,\u00a0she would pack in a hesitation or a sob, a laugh, a longing,\u00a0or joy\u00a0in a way that\u00a0were not alien to the\u00a0rural backdrop, completely in sync with it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
In another classic\u00a0Poovarasampoo\u00a0Poothachu,\u00a0a song that could have only come from a village, in the film\u00a0Kizhakke\u00a0Pogum\u00a0Rail, Janaki amma\u2019s voice\u00a0oscillates between flirtation,\u00a0shyness,\u00a0want, hope and also the fervent appeal to the deity to make it happen, the weight of\u00a0what is to come, just as a woman-child might feel in the circumstances.\u00a0In\u00a0Alaigal\u00a0Oivathillai, set in a beachside village,\u00a0Aayiram\u00a0Thamarai\u00a0Mottukale,\u00a0she manages to bring in that tender, tentative physical intimacy\u00a0in the duet\u00a0along with SPB\u00a0as\u00a0young Radha and Karthik\u00a0discover each other.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
That plausibility she brings to the song is\u00a0probably what\u00a0endeared Janaki to her\u00a0heroines, her\u00a0fans, her\u00a0stars, composers, and\u00a0her directors.\u00a0It was not for nothing\u00a0that she was called\u00a0IsaiArasi (Queen of music), so\u00a0well\u00a0could she\u00a0lend her voice to truthfully convey what any woman would feel intensely.\u00a0The richness of the rural landscape we have seen in Tamil cinema owes as much to Janaki Amma as it does to Bharathiraja, both dear departed\u00a0now.\u00a0<\/p>\n
