S\u00e9bastien Vani\u010dek\u2019s sequel is a ferocious banger, continuing the franchise\u2019s consistent streak of good-to-great <em>Evil Dead<\/em> movies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of my favorite elements of the film comes from <strong>Luciane Buchanan<\/strong>\u2018s performance as Tia\/a Deadite (she\u2019s prominently featured in the trailers for a reason). The franchise has a long history of memorable Deadite performances. I had the chance to sit down with Buchanan, so, of course, I had to ask\u2026did she take any inspiration from previous performances in the franchise for her Deadite portrayal?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<strong>You know, I\u2019m a big fan of Jane Levy\u2019s Mia and Alyssa Sutherland\u2019s Ellie<\/strong>,\u201d said Buchanan. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Me too, Luciane. Me too. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The actress continued, \u201c<strong>I just find their physicality really interesting, as well as their facial expressions. It\u2019s so simple, but they\u2019re doing so much. But I didn\u2019t want to replicate it. I wanted Tia to be her own person. So, yeah, it was just a collaboration with all departments and trying to figure out who she was.<\/strong>\u201c<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mention of Alyssa Sutherland didn\u2019t shock me whatsoever. Almost immediately, Sutherland became a fan favorite for her performance as Ellie\/a Deadite in <em>Evil Dead Rise<\/em>. Despite one hell of a portrayal by star Lily Sullivan, I\u2019d argue Sutherland is the one who makes that movie work. She\u2019s just that good. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While I don\u2019t want to call Levy\u2019s portrayal of Mia\/a Deadite in Fede Alvarez\u2019s <em>Evil Dead<\/em> \u201cunderrated\u201d, it does feel that way after Sutherland came onto the scene. That said, Levy is incredible. Not only does she have one of the most satisfying moments in the entire franchise (that chainsaw to the face), but her Deadite performance scares the living hell out of me. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Watching <em>Burn<\/em>, it was clear to me that Buchanan understood the level of Deadite performances that had come before her and wanted to make her own mark. She does so in ways you\u2019ll have to wait to see this weekend. Let\u2019s just say, she practically owns the middle chunk of the movie. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As for Buchanan\u2019s makeup, every Deadite has its own signature look. To look at hers, you\u2019d think it would\u2019ve been a difficult process, but the actress assures me it wasn\u2019t so bad. \u201c<strong>I think on the worst day, it was roughly three hours. But the more we did it, we knocked some time off.<\/strong>\u201d Obviously, three hours is still a long time to sit in a chair. Yet that\u2019s nothing compared to the horror stories I\u2019ve heard of actors having makeup applied for six hours or more. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Buchanan seems to have delighted in the process, though, offering some details on one of the film\u2019s more memorable images\u2026the headrest stuck in her face. \u201c<strong>The whole headrest was weeks and weeks of preparation. The rods were made out of paper straws that they sprayed with metallic paint\u2026 It was crazy. I had magnets stuck to my throat and whatnot. It was just fun to explore the process, and it turned out really great.<\/strong>\u201c<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It really did. And that same enthusiastic energy comes through in Buchanan\u2019s performance, one that captures the giddy maliciousness of the Deadites wonderfully. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the film, after the loss of her husband, a woman seeks solace with her in-laws in their secluded family home. As one by one they are transformed into Deadites\u2014turning the gathering into a family reunion from hell\u2014she comes to discover that the vows she took in life live on\u2026 even in death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Dune: Part Two\u00a0<\/em>actress\u00a0<strong>Souheila Yacoub<\/strong>\u00a0stars as Alice in\u00a0<em>Evil Dead Burn<\/em>\u00a0alongside\u00a0<strong>Hunter Doohan<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>Wednesday<\/em>),\u00a0<strong>Luciane Buchanan<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>The Night Agent<\/em>), and\u00a0<strong>Tandi Wright<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>Pearl<\/em>), with\u00a0<strong>Erroll Shand, Edgar Price, Maude Davey, Keanu Karim,\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong>\u00a0Victory Ndukwe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Evil Dead Burn<\/em> is now in theaters via Warner Bros. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"single-tags\">Tags: Evil Dead Burn luciane buchanan Sebastien Vanicek <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"categories single-categories\">Categorized:Interviews<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Courtesy of Warner Bros.
