{"id":35129,"date":"2026-07-11T01:41:22","date_gmt":"2026-07-11T05:41:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/design-providers.com\/rise\/south-sudan-un-acts-ahead-of-drought-to-protect-thousands\/"},"modified":"2026-07-11T01:41:22","modified_gmt":"2026-07-11T05:41:22","slug":"south-sudan-un-acts-ahead-of-drought-to-protect-thousands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/design-providers.com\/rise\/south-sudan-un-acts-ahead-of-drought-to-protect-thousands\/","title":{"rendered":"South Sudan: UN acts ahead of drought to protect thousands"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The UN World Food\u00a0Programme\u00a0(<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www1.wfp.org\/\">WFP<\/a>) and the Government of South Sudan\u00a0on Friday\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wfp.org\/news\/wfp-triggers-historic-anticipatory-action-plan-shield-people-severe-drought-impact-south-sudan\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.wfp.org\/news\/wfp-triggers-historic-anticipatory-action-plan-shield-people-severe-drought-impact-south-sudan\">activated<\/a>\u00a0the country\u2019s first-ever drought anticipatory plan targeting more than 65,000 people in Budi and Kapoeta North counties.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Anticipatory action\u00a0is when\u00a0humanitarian\u00a0assistance\u00a0is triggered before a\u00a0crisis\u00a0hits to\u00a0protect lives, food security and incomes, WFP explained.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A transformative shift<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>The agency is now delivering cash transfers and early warning communications to families so that they can\u00a0prepare for\u00a0drought conditions, strengthen\u00a0resilience\u00a0and reduce the risk of worsening hunger.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Anticipatory action is transforming the way we manage climate-related shocks<\/strong>,\u201d said Mutinta Chimuka, WFP Country Director in South Sudan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRather than wait for drought to deepen humanitarian needs,\u00a0<strong>we are acting based on forecasts and evidence to support communities before livelihoods are disrupted<\/strong>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Helping families now<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Under the plan,\u00a0<strong>52,751 people are receiving cash\u00a0assistance<\/strong>\u00a0to help meet their essential food and livelihood needs before conditions deteriorate. This support also aims to strengthen\u00a0purchasing\u00a0power and reduce the need for families to adopt negative coping mechanisms.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>More than 65,000 people are\u00a0also\u00a0benefitting\u00a0from early warning communication and awareness campaigns\u00a0<\/strong>that provide essential information on drought preparedness and mitigation, livestock management, water use,\u00a0and\u00a0livelihood planning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Agro-pastoral communities in Eastern Equatoria depend heavily on seasonal rainfall for their crops and livestock, WFP said.\u00a0Prolonged dry spells can quickly lead to crop and livestock losses, reduced\u00a0incomes\u00a0and worsening food insecurity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Forecasts,\u00a0warning\u00a0and financing<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>The anticipatory plan combines scientific forecasts, early warning\u00a0information\u00a0and pre-arranged financing, thus allowing WFP and partners to help vulnerable communities to withstand climate shocks, protect development gains and build resilience for the future.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u00a0was made\u00a0possible through $1.08 million from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and $1.37 million from Germany.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Previous\u00a0investments from Ireland and KOICA helped\u00a0establish\u00a0South Sudan\u2019s anticipatory action system, including the development of the drought anticipatory action plan and enhanced operational readiness
