A proof of concept \u201cpilot film\u201d was released for artist <\/span>Yoshitaka Amano\u2019s <\/span>ZAN<\/span> anime adaptation at this year\u2019s Anime Expo last week. The first-look of the project was initially teased as a trailer for a \u201climited anime series\u201d of ZAN<\/em> in June 2026.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n The anime\u2019s <\/span>official YouTube channel describes the main synopsis as:\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Across time and dimensions, the epic battle of ZAN begins.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n During Japan\u2019s Warring States period, the warrior ZAN was locked in a fierce battle at Azuchi Castle. Guided by the mysterious voice of a young girl, he steps beyond time and space into another world\u2014a realm where he must face powerful rivals and monstrous beings known as Tropes. RIKKA, the ruler who commands the Tropes\u2014the very symbols of life\u2014maintains the world\u2019s order. Questioning the justice behind his own battles, ZAN embarks on a journey to uncover the truth, joined by Panther, a mechanical lifeform, and Uzume, the enigmatic girl who called out to him.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Some of the production staff involved with the pilot film include<\/span> Toru Yoshida (<\/span>Gattai Robot Atranger<\/span> director) as director, <\/span>Moriyasu Taniguchi (<\/span>Anime R founder) as character designer and animation director, and <\/span>Kunio Okawara (<\/span>Mobile Suit Gundam<\/span> mechanical designer) as mechanical designer. Amano is credited with the original concept.<\/span> Meanwhile, the staff for the planned limited animated series will consist of <\/span>Masashi Ikeda (<\/span>Mobile Suit Gundam Wing<\/span> original director) and Yoshida<\/span> as animation directors, Taniguchi as main animator, <\/span>Ryosuke Takahashi (<\/span>Armored Trooper Votoms <\/span>creator and director) as series composer, <\/span>Yuya Takashima (<\/span>The Fable<\/span> series composer, <\/span>Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch of Mercury<\/span> sci-fi researcher) as writer, and Okawara and <\/span>Minoru Nishida (<\/span>The Dawn of the Witch <\/span>background art director) as art directors.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \u00a9 Yoshitaka Amano \/ Yoshitaka Amano Inc.<\/span><\/p>\n Development on a <\/span>ZAN<\/span> anime project has been reported as far back as 2010, when Amano was slated to direct a project titled <\/span>DEVA ZAN<\/span> that was originally set to be released in spring 2012. In 2022, SOZO Comics announced an anime series as part of a project that included a Play to Earn blockchain game and NFT art. In 2023, it was announced that JAYMEN TOKYO and <\/span>N LITE<\/span> were were collaborating to produce a <\/span>ZAN <\/span>film, with production \u201ccentered in Japan, with a Japanese director, screenwriter, and the series creator spearheading the effort\u201d and a planned 2025 to 2026 release date<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n The <\/span>DEVA ZAN <\/span>art project includes over 300 original artwork from Amano. An art book was published by Dark Horse Books in 2013, with a comic series also being published by SOZO Comics.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n The Dark Horse Manga imprint will release a <\/span>second edition<\/span> of Amano\u2019s <\/span>DEVA ZAN<\/span> art book in March 2027, which it describes as:\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n In Japanese Buddhism, twelve generals\u2014the Juni Jinsho\u2014stood guard over the cosmos at the points of the zodiac.
