But while Washington appears willing to restart talks, the White House insists that the two nations\u2019 cease-fire is dead in the water.<\/p>\n<p>Welcome back to World Brief, where we\u2019re looking at new mediation efforts in the <strong>U.S.-Iran<\/strong> war, plans for ousted <strong>Bangladeshi <\/strong>leader Sheikh Hasina to return home, and one of <strong>Spain<\/strong>\u2019s deadliest wildfires to date.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>New Negotiations<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Regional mediators <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/07\/10\/world\/middleeast\/iran-us-ceasefire-talks.html\">pushed<\/a> U.S. and Iranian officials on Friday to return to the negotiating table after days of escalating strikes threatened to push both countries back into all-out war. But while Washington appears willing to restart talks, the White House insists that the two nations\u2019 cease-fire is dead in the water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Islamic Republic of Iran has asked us to continue \u2018talks,\u2019\u201d Trump <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116896167446779964\">wrote<\/a> on Truth Social on Friday. \u201cWe have agreed to do so, but the United States has stated to them, in no uncertain terms, that the Cease Fire is OVER!\u201d Trump has previously called negotiations with Tehran a \u201cwaste of time,\u201d accusing Iranian leaders of being liars and \u201cviolent, vicious people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tehran has yet to publicly respond to the United States\u2019 claims.<\/p>\n<p>A Qatari delegation, in coordination with Washington, reportedly flew to Iran on Friday to push the regime to de-escalate its attacks on U.S. military sites and commercial ships in the Persian Gulf. On Tuesday, Iranian forces launched strikes on three oil and gas tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, prompting U.S. retaliation. In the ensuing days, both sides have exchanged fire, with Tehran targeting U.S. facilities in Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, and Qatar and Washington <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CENTCOM\/status\/2075053781784367389?s=20\">striking<\/a> \u201cair defense systems, coastal surveillance assets, missile and drone storage sites, naval capabilities, and military logistics infrastructure along Iran\u2019s coastline,\u201d according to U.S. Central Command.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, officials from Egypt, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey have conducted multiple phone calls with U.S. and Iranian representatives in recent days to urge both sides to pause their operations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are extensive diplomatic efforts to first agree with both sides on de-escalation and then set a date for another round of negotiations between the technical teams,\u201d one regional source told <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/07\/09\/us-iran-nuclear-deal-mediators-qatar-pakistan\">Axios<\/a> on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Although fighting appeared to subside on Friday, there were scattered reports of overnight explosions in Iran on Thursday. However, Centcom <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/7\/9\/explosions-heard-in-iran-as-us-military-denies-involvement\">denied<\/a> launching any new assaults.<\/p>\n<p>At the heart of the conflict remains the Strait of Hormuz, where renewed fighting has once again <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/economy\/2026\/7\/10\/strait-of-hormuz-shipping-grinds-to-halt-as-us-iran-resume-fighting\">upended<\/a> commercial operations. Since active conflict resumed on Tuesday, no large vessel has attempted to cross the strait via the U.S.-designated route, which circumvents Iranian waters by hugging Oman\u2019s coast. And only five ships have traversed the thoroughfare in the past few days, compared with the 45 transits recorded on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Such actions are likely to worsen already consequential supply chain disruptions. The International Monetary Fund <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/-\/media\/files\/publications\/weo\/2026\/update\/july\/english\/text.pdf\">warned<\/a> on Wednesday that the global economy was set to slow dramatically in 2026, with growth expected to fall to 3 percent from last year\u2019s 3.5 percent. At the same time, global inflation rates will jump to 4.7 percent in 2026 from 4.1 percent the year prior.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Today\u2019s Most Read<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>What We\u2019re Following<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Returning home. <\/strong>Ousted Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina plans to return to Dhaka in December after spending nearly two years in self-imposed exile in India, she told <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/bangladeshs-hasina-plans-december-return-with-party-colleagues-surrender-2026-07-10\/?utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=Newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=Daily-Briefing&amp;utm_term=071026&amp;lctg=607f1056abd4f461f466319b&amp;user_email=6b04284e4d00370f16d3dac0a626e01bf24d86e4d6995646867da6aa680488d0\">Reuters<\/a> this week. Alongside senior Awami League party colleagues, Hasina plans to present herself before Bangladesh\u2019s courts to challenge efforts to shutter her party.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey may arrest me on my return. They may even kill me,\u201d Hasina said in the nearly hourlong interview late on Thursday into Friday. \u201cStill, I have to go. \u2026 My party leaders and workers are being subjected to tremendous repression. If death comes, I want it to come on my own soil.\u201d A Dhaka court found Hasina guilty of crimes against humanity in 2025 and sentenced her to death in absentia for orchestrating a brutal crackdown of anti-government protesters the year before.<\/p>\n<p>Since Hasina fled Bangladesh, Dhaka has tried to force New Delhi to extradite her. India\u2019s continued refusal has soured bilateral relations between the two nations and further inflamed tensions in the region. By announcing her return to Bangladesh, Hasina\u2019s risky gambit could revitalize diplomatic ties.<\/p>\n<p>Still, it is unlikely that Hasina\u2019s actions will improve her own standing. \u201cAfter such brutal murders and genocide, the mass murderer Sheikh Hasina has no remorse to this day,\u201d Bangladeshi Home Minister <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/7\/10\/condemned-ex-pm-hasina-plans-december-return-to-bangladesh\">Salahuddin Ahmed<\/a> said on July 4 at an event commemorating the second anniversary of the uprising.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Deadly blaze. <\/strong>A massive wildfire <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/07\/10\/world\/europe\/spain-wildfire-deaths.html?campaign_id=9&amp;emc=edit_nn_20260710&amp;instance_id=178512&amp;nl=the-morning&amp;regi_id=159637444&amp;segment_id=222867&amp;user_id=3a92aa035d8e7d51a6ba63375b87c152\">tore through<\/a> southern Spain on Friday, prompting local authorities to deploy more than 500 firefighters and civil protection workers. \u201cThis is the first time we\u2019ve faced a fire as devastating as this one,\u201d Francisco Miguel Reyes, the mayor of the Spanish town of Los Gallardos, said on Friday. \u201cIt looks like a bomb went off.\u201d Already, at least 12 people have died, and 23 others remain missing, making it one of the country\u2019s deadliest blazes in history.<\/p>\n<p>Igniting late Thursday in a semiarid area near the Sierra de Los Filabres mountains, the wildfire quickly spiraled out of control, as many individuals ignored evacuation or shelter-in-place orders. Many of the victims were foreign nationals. This summer, Spain (along with much of Western Europe) has suffered <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/jul\/10\/unprecedented-deadly-wildfire-southern-spain-almeria-analysis\">record-setting high temperatures<\/a>. Coupled with strong winds and little rain, small wildfires across the country have transformed into deadly blazes.<\/p>\n<p>Spain is not the only country being hit hard by wildfire season. Large fires have also <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/spain-wildfire-almeria-760ecfff1316d56837888de4ab9efa21\">scorched<\/a> swaths of southern France, disrupting the Tour de France cycling race and burning around 12,000 acres of land. More than 10,000 people in the eastern Pyrenees region have been forced to evacuate so far.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Long-range strikes. <\/strong>Ukrainian drone strikes <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/ukrainian-drone-strikes-ignite-fires-at-russian-oil-sites\/a-77900682\">damaged<\/a> a Russian oil refinery, several fuel depots, and a southern port on Friday, dealing another significant blow to Moscow\u2019s energy infrastructure. Local authorities reported no injuries; however, fires were recorded including at the Ilsky refinery, which has the capacity to process roughly 138,000 barrels of oil a day.<\/p>\n<p>Kyiv has stepped up its attacks on Moscow\u2019s oil industry in recent weeks, prompting Russian President Vladimir Putin to acknowledge that repeated assaults have triggered fuel shortages across the country. Ukrainian forces have prioritized long-range attacks to hit areas that Russia had previously considered <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/world\/ukraines-drones-are-now-reaching-siberia-and-imperiling-russian-energy-assets-e0d2caa7\">unreachable<\/a>, including refineries as far as Siberia.<\/p>\n<p>To further bolster Ukraine\u2019s military capabilities, the United States on Wednesday announced that it would grant Ukraine a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/7\/10\/trump-grants-kyiv-patriots-licences-whats-next-in-the-russia-ukraine-war\">long-coveted license<\/a> to manufacture Patriot air defense missiles domestically. \u201cThis way, you can\u2019t complain that we\u2019re not giving them enough,\u201d Trump told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the time. Still, producing Patriots is an expensive and complex enterprise, and it will take a long time before Kyiv is able to reap the benefits of its new production capabilities.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What in the World?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Why did Ghana postpone a planned visit by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Tuesday?<\/p>\n<p>A. It\u2019s unclear why Americans are gravitating toward the Spanish-only broadcast.
