With Washington and Tehran expanding the scope and scale of their attacks, experts have suggested that the Middle East may be on the brink of returning to all-out war.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Iran targeted several oil and gas tankers in the Strait of Hormuz that appeared to be trying to use a route that circumvented Iranian waters. Within hours, the U.S. military launched retaliatory strikes, and on Wednesday, President Donald Trump declared that the U.S.-Iran cease-fire was effectively \u201cover.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is in retribution for yesterday\u2019s bombing of ships by Iran,\u201d Trump <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116886505160658220\">wrote<\/a> on Truth Social on Wednesday. \u201cIf it happens again, it will get much worse!\u201d That day, Trump also suggested that he could order bombings on critical civilian infrastructure\u2014such as bridges, electric plants, and desalination facilities\u2014and he threatened to \u201ctake over Kharg Island,\u201d a vital hub for Iran\u2019s crude industry.<\/p>\n<p>Since hostilities reignited two days ago, U.S. forces have struck more than 170 targets in Iran, the U.S. military <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CENTCOM\/status\/2075053781784367389?s=20\">said<\/a> on Thursday, \u201cincluding air defense systems, coastal surveillance assets, missile and drone storage sites, naval capabilities, and military logistics infrastructure along Iran\u2019s coastline\u201d as well as small boats belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.<\/p>\n<p>According to video footage verified by the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2026\/07\/09\/world\/iran-war-us-trump\/iranian-port-cities-and-a-railway-were-struck-overnight?smid=url-share\"><em>New York Times<\/em><\/a> on Thursday as well as statements from Iranian officials, a railway bridge near the city of Agh Qala, more than 700 miles from the Strait of Hormuz, was also hit. The railway connects the capital of Tehran to the northeastern city of Mashhad, where former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was buried later that day. The burial marked the end of a weeklong <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/iran-bury-slain-supreme-leader-culmination-mass-funeral-2026-07-09\/\">funeral procession<\/a> honoring the slain leader, who was killed by U.S. and Israeli attacks on Feb. 28.<\/p>\n<p>An Iranian official also accused the United States on Thursday of targeting an area near an Iranian nuclear power plant. Recent U.S. strikes have killed at least 14 people and injured some 78 others in Iran thus far, Iranian officials said. U.S. Central Command has declined to comment on the alleged railway and nuclear power plant strikes.<\/p>\n<p>In retaliation, Iran has stepped up its own assaults, firing at U.S. targets in the Gulf nations of Kuwait, Qatar, and Bahrain, the latter of which is home to the U.S. Navy\u2019s Fifth Fleet headquarters. Tehran also claimed on Thursday to have <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2026\/07\/09\/world\/iran-war-us-trump\/33bf4be2-54f0-5c77-9832-de5799c69ed3?smid=url-share\">launched<\/a> ballistic missiles at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, a Jordanian military facility used by U.S. forces; until now, Jordan has largely avoided Iran\u2019s ire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerica still hasn\u2019t learned that bullying and breaking promises are no longer cost-free,\u201d Iran\u2019s top negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/mb_ghalibaf\/status\/2075030287071785174\">wrote<\/a> on X. \u201cLet me put it plainly: If you strike, you\u2019ll get hit.\u201d According to Kuwait\u2019s authorities, at least one person has been injured in recent days due to falling debris.<\/p>\n<p>The status of peace talks remains uncertain. On Wednesday, Trump dismissed further dialogue as a \u201cwaste of time\u201d but later <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/07\/09\/trump-iran-war-strikes-hormuz.html\">claimed<\/a> that Iranian leadership had called him because they \u201cwant to make a deal so badly.\u201d Tehran has yet to publicly state whether negotiations are still on the table.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Israel may be ready to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/katz-idf-alert-and-prepared-to-resume-campaign-in-iran-with-even-greater-force\/\">rejoin the fray<\/a>. On Thursday, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said that Israel is prepared to resume military operations against Iran \u201cwith even greater force\u201d if needed.<\/p>\n<h3>Today\u2019s Most Read<\/h3>\n<h3>What We\u2019re Following<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Britain\u2019s biggest races. <\/strong>Britain\u2019s ruling Labour Party <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/7\/9\/uk-labour-leadership-nominations-begin-whos-running-and-how-it-works\">opened nominations<\/a> on Thursday for a leadership contest to replace outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who resigned in June in the wake of Labour\u2019s abysmal performance in local elections. Candidates have until Wednesday to submit their bids; if multiple individuals are put forward, then a vote will be held the following month.<\/p>\n<p>However, only one nominee is in the running so far: Andy Burnham, former Greater Manchester mayor and recent winner of the Makerfield by-election. Burnham\u2019s popularity has skyrocketed since he declared his intention to replace Starmer, with former Health Secretary Wes Streeting backing his candidacy despite previously expressing his own interest in Downing Street. If Burnham faces no challengers, then he could become premier as soon as July 17.<\/p>\n<p>Burnham isn\u2019t the only British politician facing a special election. On Tuesday, far-right Reform UK leader Nigel Farage <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/07\/07\/uk\/nigel-farage-reform-intl\">resigned<\/a> from Parliament, where he represented the constituency of Clacton, to force a by-election that he apparently hoped would stifle investigations into his financial affairs. \u201cI have decided that the people of Clacton should be the judges of my actions,\u201d Farage said after declaring his intention to re-run for the seat.<\/p>\n<p>Yet what was meant to win over public favor appears to have backfired, with rival parties dismissing his move as a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/07\/09\/uk\/nigel-farage-special-election-bin-face-intl\">publicity stunt<\/a> and vowing to boycott the race. That has left Farage facing just one candidate: Count Binface, a satirical character played by comedian Jon Harvey who wears a trash can on his head. \u201cGame on, Nige,\u201d Binface <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CountBinface\/status\/2074488375499735505\">wrote<\/a> on X on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Uranium exports. <\/strong>Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.the-independent.com\/news\/world\/australasia\/australia-modi-uranium-far-right-protest-b3011694.html\">agreed<\/a> on Thursday to sell uranium to India, ending a yearslong delay caused by concerns that New Delhi would use the critical resource to produce nuclear weapons. Neither Albanese nor Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi specified how much uranium would be sold or when. Yet both leaders have confirmed that the uranium would only be used for peaceful purposes, such as to generate energy.<\/p>\n<p>Australia has the world\u2019s largest known uranium deposits, but as the country does not have any nuclear weapons or nuclear energy facilities, Canberra exports all of its supply. Meanwhile, India possesses around <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.armscontrol.org\/factsheets\/nuclear-weapons-who-has-what-glance\">190 nuclear weapons<\/a>, according to the Arms Control Association, and has expressed interest in expanding its arsenal. Canberra had initially refused to sell uranium to New Delhi, as India is not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. However, Australia began to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/modi-australia-india-albanese-uranium-32cbec58c8907d2b4aea934f2e241966\">ease its position<\/a> in 2014, with the caveat that India separate its civilian and military nuclear programs and allow International Atomic Energy Agency oversight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAustralia and India are close partners and even closer friends,\u201d Albanese told reporters \u200bon Thursday after finalizing the deal, with Modi emphasizing the \u201chistoric opportunities\u201d that both countries have for greater collaboration.
