{"id":34867,"date":"2026-07-09T23:08:12","date_gmt":"2026-07-10T03:08:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/design-providers.com\/rise\/remembering-the-srebrenica-genocide-fear-is-all-that-kept-me-moving\/"},"modified":"2026-07-09T23:08:12","modified_gmt":"2026-07-10T03:08:12","slug":"remembering-the-srebrenica-genocide-fear-is-all-that-kept-me-moving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/design-providers.com\/rise\/remembering-the-srebrenica-genocide-fear-is-all-that-kept-me-moving\/","title":{"rendered":"Remembering the Srebrenica genocide: \u2018Fear is all that kept me moving\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The\u00a0massacre\u00a0in\u00a0eastern\u00a0Bosnia and Herzegovina\u00a0was the largest in Europe since the Holocaust and\u00a0among\u00a0the darkest chapters in the Balkan wars\u00a0that\u00a0erupted following the breakup of the former Yugoslavia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Bosnian Serb army overran Srebrenica, which was previously declared a safe area under UN\u202f<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.un.org\/en\/S\/RES\/819(1993)\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/docs.un.org\/en\/S\/RES\/819(1993)\">Security Council Resolution 819\u202f(1993)<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Many of the victims had sought\u00a0protection\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0UN\u00a0compound in\u00a0nearby\u00a0Poto\u010dari\u00a0but\u00a0were separated from their families, executed, and buried in mass graves.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                  <span class=\"author\">UN Photo\/Eskinder Debebe<\/span><br \/>\n                          <span class=\"caption\">Hasan Hasanovi\u0107 of the Srebrenica Memorial Center addresses the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Fear,\u00a0loss\u00a0and survival<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Hasan Hasanovi\u0107 was 19 when\u00a0Srebrenica\u00a0fell\u00a0on 11 July 1995.\u00a0Along with his father and twin brother Husein, he\u00a0joined a column of men and\u00a0boys\u00a0attempting\u00a0to escape through\u00a0the\u00a0forest.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Within hours\u00a0he was\u00a0separated\u00a0from his relatives,\u00a0walking\u00a0alone\u00a0for days\u00a0sleepless and\u00a0hungry\u00a0amid ambushes,\u00a0executions and artillery attacks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFear was all that kept me moving,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0Mr. Hasanovi\u0107, head of the oral history\u00a0programme\u00a0at the Srebrenica Memorial Center, speaking\u00a0in\u00a0the UN General Assembly Hall.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYears later, after their\u00a0remains\u00a0were recovered\u00a0from mass graves,\u00a0I buried my father and my twin brother\u00a0with\u00a0my own hands. Nothing could prepare me for those moments.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                  <span class=\"author\">UN Photo\/Eskinder Debebe<\/span><br \/>\n                          <span class=\"caption\">Chaloka Beyani, Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide and Under-Secretary-General, addresses the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>A collective responsibility<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Two top UN courts \u2013 the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.icj-cij.org\/en\">International Court of Justice<\/a> (<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.icj-cij.org\/\">ICJ<\/a>) and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY)\u00a0\u2013 both\u00a0recognized\u00a0that\u00a0the acts committed\u00a0in Srebrenica\u00a0constituted genocide.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is the second year the UN is\u00a0commemorating\u00a0the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/srebrenica-genocide-commemoration-day?_gl=1*rdca4p*_gcl_aw*R0NMLjE3ODAwNjE5MDYuRUFJYUlRb2JDaE1JOUp6UHFNX2VsQU1WRkZ6X0FSMG44Z09MRUFBWUFTQUFFZ0xWWHZEX0J3RQ..*_gcl_au*MzcxNzgzNzg3LjE3NzkzNzI4OTY.*_ga*ODI3Nzg1My4xNzgzNjA1NDk0*_ga_S5EKZKSB78*czE3ODM2MTIxNTgkbzIkZzEkdDE3ODM2MTIxNzYkajQyJGwwJGgw\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/srebrenica-genocide-commemoration-day?_gl=1*rdca4p*_gcl_aw*R0NMLjE3ODAwNjE5MDYuRUFJYUlRb2JDaE1JOUp6UHFNX2VsQU1WRkZ6X0FSMG44Z09MRUFBWUFTQUFFZ0xWWHZEX0J3RQ..*_gcl_au*MzcxNzgzNzg3LjE3NzkzNzI4OTY.*_ga*ODI3Nzg1My4xNzgzNjA1NDk0*_ga_S5EKZKSB78*czE3ODM2MTIxNTgkbzIkZzEkdDE3ODM2MTIxNzYkajQyJGwwJGgw\">International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica<\/a>,\u00a0observed\u00a0on 11 July.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0massacre \u201cwill forever lay heavily on the collective conscience of the international community, the United Nations, and the modern history of our world,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0Chaloka\u00a0Beyani, UN Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He\u00a0called for a moment of silence\u00a0to remember and\u00a0honour\u00a0the victims as well as\u00a0the women and girls who were forcibly displaced from\u00a0the enclave\u00a0and tortured in the aftermath.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Heed the warning signs<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Following Srebrenica, \u201cthe world once again said: \u2018Never again,\u2019\u201d the UN Secretary-General recalled in\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/en\/content\/sg\/statements\/2026-07-09\/secretary-generals-remarks-the-observance-of-the-international-day-of-reflection-and-commemoration-of-the-1995-genocide-srebrenica-delivered\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/en\/content\/sg\/statements\/2026-07-09\/secretary-generals-remarks-the-observance-of-the-international-day-of-reflection-and-commemoration-of-the-1995-genocide-srebrenica-delivered\">remarks<\/a>\u00a0read by his Chef de Cabinet, Earle Courtenay Rattray.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYet, as we know, hate speech is on the rise \u2013 fueling discrimination,\u00a0extremism\u00a0and division.\u00a0Convicted war criminals are glorified,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot turn away from these warning signs. We must act early \u2013 for prevention is our shared duty, and our surest protection.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                  <span class=\"author\">UN Photo\/Eskinder Debebe<\/span><br \/>\n                          <span class=\"caption\">Denis Be\u0107irovi\u0107, Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, addresses the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Genocide denial \u2018a new threat\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Denis Be\u0107irovi\u0107,\u00a0Chairman\u00a0of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, underscored the need to\u00a0defend the integrity of international law and the authority of international institutions\u00a0more than ever.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must not allow facts established by court judgments to become a subject of political calculations,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe denial of the genocide against Bosniaks is an anti-civilisational\u00a0act.\u00a0It is an insult to the dead and a new threat to the living.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Uphold the promise of \u2018never\u00a0again\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Annalena Baerbock, the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/\">General Assembly President<\/a>,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/80\/2026\/07\/09\/pga-remarks-at-the-observance-of-the-international-day-of-reflection-and-commemoration-of-the-1995-genocide-in-srebrenica\/\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/80\/2026\/07\/09\/pga-remarks-at-the-observance-of-the-international-day-of-reflection-and-commemoration-of-the-1995-genocide-in-srebrenica\/\">said<\/a>\u00a0genocide\u00a0\u2013\u00a0as unfortunately witnessed in Srebrenica, Rwanda, and\u00a0elsewhere\u00a0\u2013\u00a0\u201cdoes not begin with mass graves\u201d but with\u00a0hatred and discrimination,\u00a0attempts to divide people into \u201cus\u201d versus \u201cthem\u201d,\u00a0and policies and rhetoric that strip human beings of their dignity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a video message, she urged the international community to\u00a0\u201censure that &#8216;never\u00a0again&#8217; is not merely a phrase we repeat, but a promise we uphold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emina Sinanovi\u0107 was\u00a0only\u00a0five\u00a0years old\u00a0when she lost her father,\u00a0grandfather\u00a0and uncle\u00a0in the\u00a0Srebrenica\u00a0genocide.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Lives taken, futures stolen<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cFor many people, Srebrenica is history. For me,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0every\u00a0day of my life. It steals the embraces you will never receive. It steals\u00a0the words\u00a0you will never hear. It steals the memories you will never have the chance to create.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She called for \u201cthe world to stop looking away whenever genocide is denied, because genocide denial is the
