PORT-AU-PRINCE \u2014 Haiti has deployed a 31-member volunteer medical mission to Venezuela, sending doctors, surgeons and emergency specialists to assist Venezuela, devastated by twin earthquakes, even as the country continues to face its own humanitarian and security crises.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis mission reflects the excellence of the longstanding historical ties between Haiti and Venezuela,\u201d\u00a0 the government said in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n The delegation left Haiti on July 7 and arrived in Venezuela the following day carrying 5.5 tons of medical supplies and equipment. The quakes caused widespread destruction in northern Venezuela, including Caracas and the coastal city of Caraballeda in La Guaira state, where entire neighborhoods were flattened.<\/p>\n Government figures<\/a> released July 8 reported 3,811 deaths, 16,740 injuries and more than 58,000 buildings damaged or destroyed.
