While U.S. federal courts have convicted 10 defendants connected to the case, judicial proceedings in Haiti remain unresolved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PORT-AU-PRINCE \u2014 Five years after President Jovenel Mo\u00efse was assassinated in his bedroom, throngs of supporters, relatives and government officials gathered across Haiti Tuesday to honor his memory and renew calls for justice in a case that remains unresolved.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe will continue to ask all the communal, spiritual spaces to support us through candle-lighting and oil-burning rituals, so that justice can be served for Jovenel,\u201d said Rosemond Jean, a longtime supporter of the late president.<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe will continue to mobilize so that, by the sixth year, we will be here to assess the outcome of criminals arrested, tried and convicted in Mo\u00efse\u2019s assassination,\u201d Jean added during the Tuesday march.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite years of investigations, judicial transfers and dozens of suspects in Haiti and the United States, Haiti has yet to hold a trial or convict anyone for the July 7, 2021, assassination that plunged the country into deeper political instability. The case remains under investigation, now led by a sixth judge, underscoring persistent weaknesses in Haiti\u2019s judicial system.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tuesday\u2019s anniversary was marked by memorial ceremonies, wreath laying, requiem masses, marches and tributes organized by <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/story.php?story_fbid=1432999122185063&amp;id=100064249677209&amp;mibextid=wwXIfr&amp;rdid=j4d6u0sJeydVWhaL#\">government officials<\/a> and supporters of the late president.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_swiper-wrapper swiper-wrapper\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_slide swiper-slide\">Rosemond Jean, a supporter of late President Jovenel Mo\u00efse, calls for justice and urges authorities to arrest, prosecute and convict those responsible for the assassination during a commemoration marking the fifth anniversary of the killing on July 7, 2026, in P\u00e9tion-Ville. Photo by Juhakenson Blaise \/ The Haitian Times\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_button-next swiper-button-next swiper-button-white\" role=\"button\"\/><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Pause Slideshow\" class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_button-pause\" role=\"button\"\/><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-a-prolonged-investigation-with-no-trial-in-sight\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A prolonged investigation with no trial in sight<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The case is now assigned to Judge Jean Denis Cyprien, after Haiti\u2019s Court of Appeal overturned <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/haitiantimes.com\/2024\/02\/20\/martine-jovenel-moise-indicted-assassination\/\">a previous order issued by the previous prosecutor, Judge Walter Wesser Voltaire. Back in February 2024, Voltaire\u2019s order had indicted roughly 50 people, including the widow and former First Lady Martine Mo\u00efse, several former senior government officials and numerous individuals close to the assassinated president.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since taking over the case, Cyprien has questioned current and former police officials, human rights advocates, political figures, former associates of Mo\u00efse and other individuals. Among his latest actions were arrest warrants submitted to Haiti\u2019s National Police (PNH) and requests for Interpol assistance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the latter, Cyprien is seeking to locate several suspects living abroad, including former Radio T\u00e9l\u00e9vision Cara\u00efbes journalist Jean Monard M\u00e9tellus, ex-Justice Minister Rockefeller Vincent, former High Court Judge Wendelle Coq Th\u00e9lot \u2014 <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/lenouvelliste.com\/en\/article\/252482\/judge-wendelle-coq-thelot-passes-away\">who reportedly died last year<\/a> \u2014 attorney Max Beauvoir and entrepreneur Samir Handal. They all face allegations that include criminal association, assassination, attempted assassination and complicity in the killing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Haiti\u2019s investigation remains stalled, prosecutions have moved much faster in the United States, where federal authorities charged several suspects accused of helping finance or organize the plot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ten of the 11 defendants prosecuted in U.S. federal court have pleaded guilty or been convicted.
