The 2026 edition of the Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF) announced that <\/span>Mononoke the Movie: Chapter III \u2013 The Curse of the Serpent<\/span> and <\/span>We Are Aliens<\/span> are among seven animated films selected to screen in competition for its expanded Feature Animation category.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Additionally, the stop-motion TV anime series <\/span>Candy Caries<\/span> will be screened as part of OIAF\u2019s Animation Made for Young Audiences 7-12 category. The Grand Prize winner for Feature Animation will be announced live at the OIAF Awards Ceremony on September 26, 2026 at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Mononoke the Movie: Chapter III <\/span>was released in Japanese theaters on May 29, 2026. Its Japanese title is <\/span>Gekijoban Mononoke Daisansho: Hebigami<\/span>. It is part of a new anime film trilogy for the supernatural <\/span>Mononoke <\/span>series.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \u00a9\u30c4\u30a4\u30f3\u30a8\u30f3\u30b8\u30f3<\/span><\/p>\n The first entries, <\/span>Mononoke The Movie: The Phantom in the Rain <\/span>and <\/span>Mononoke The Movie: Chapter II \u2013 The Ashes of Rage<\/span>, were released in Japan in July 2024 and March 2025, respectively. Both are <\/span>streaming on Netflix<\/span> internationally. A new project was announced earlier this month.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Like the second film, <\/span>Mononoke the Movie: Chapter III <\/span>had <\/span>Kenji Nakamura (director of the first film) as chief director and <\/span>Yasumi Atarashi as scriptwriter. <\/span>Tomoaki Koshida (<\/span>RPG Real Estate<\/span>) served as the new director, while <\/span>Kitsuneko Nagata returned from the first two anime films as character designer. <\/span>Studio Kafka and <\/span>EOTA handled the animation production.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Mononoke<\/span> began with the \u201cGoblin Cat\u201d episodes of the 2006 horror anime anthology <\/span>Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales<\/span>. The 2007 <\/span>Mononoke<\/span> TV anime series was a spinoff series from that show.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n We Are Aliens<\/span> (also known in Japanese as<\/span> Wareware wa Uchujin<\/span>) is scheduled to premiere in Japan on September 25, 2026. It is directed by <\/span>Kohei Kadowaki, who is also credited as the anime film\u2019s planner, scriptwriter, storyboard artist, and editor.
