UN teams in Gaza\u00a0continued to collect food and fuel from the Kerem Shalom crossing over the weekend,\u00a0UN\u00a0Spokesperson St\u00e9phane Dujarric\u00a0told journalists<\/a>\u00a0in New York.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He explained, however,\u00a0that\u00a0what humanitarians\u00a0and the private sector can bring in is limited because all other crossings\u00a0remain\u00a0closed for cargo while restrictions on specific types of supplies\u00a0remain\u00a0in place.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Drop in aid volume<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n

\u201cData from the\u00a0UN 2720 Mechanism<\/a>\u00a0shows a decline in the overall volume of supplies that we and our partners\u00a0have been\u00a0able to bring in last\u202fmonth<\/strong>,\u202fless than 42,000 pallets, down from about 46,600 in May,\u201d\u00a0he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Mechanism,\u00a0authorised\u00a0under\u00a0Security Council Resolution 2720 (2023),<\/a>\u00a0aims to accelerate aid flows into\u00a0the enclave. Humanitarian organizations register planned\u00a0aid\u00a0consignments on a portal and database where they are tracked.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The initiative supports the movement of\u00a0the\u00a0consignments,\u00a0including\u00a0through the Jordan Corridor route and by sea via the Ashdod\u00a0port in Israel.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mr. Dujarric said that last week,\u00a0only 42 per cent of the supplies from Egypt and 65 per cent of those from Ashdod port could be offloaded at\u00a0the\u00a0Kerem Shalom\u00a0crossing<\/strong>, even though they were \u201calready approved in principle\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Surviving childhood<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n

The\u00a0UN continues to voice concern for children across the\u00a0Occupied Palestinian\u00a0Territory\u00a0(OPT).\u00a0<\/p>\n

Child rights agency UNICEF<\/a> underscored\u00a0the need for\u00a0youngsters\u00a0in Gaza to receive proper nutrition,\u00a0healthcare\u00a0and protection, after more than\u00a01,000 days\u00a0of war.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Children\u00a0\u201chave been killed, maimed, displaced, and deprived of the essentials that they need to survive, grow, and recover<\/strong>,\u201d Spokesperson Louise Wateridge told\u202fUN News<\/em>\u202fon Monday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She said reports\u00a0indicate\u00a0that\u00a0overall,\u00a0more than 60,000 children have been killed or injured, while\u00a0\u201ca child has been killed on average every single day for more than eight months\u201d despite the October ceasefire.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cChildren in Gaza have taken their first steps through rubble, spoken their first words against the deafening sounds of bombs and strikes, and\u00a0they\u2019ve\u00a0known nothing but war, displacement, and loss. Others\u00a0didn’t\u00a0even survive long enough to speak their first words<\/strong>,\u201d\u00a0she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cChildhood should not begin in survival mode. No child\u2019s earliest years should be defined by the sounds of bombs and strikes, the loss of home, or the absence of enough food, water, and care.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Young lives lost in the West Bank<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n

Meanwhile, the UN aid coordination office OCHA<\/a>\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0Israeli forces shot and killed a 16-year-old in the West Bank on Sunday<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The incident occurred at the Qalandiya camp, near Jerusalem. Two other children were shot in\u202fthe\u202flower limbs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is another reminder that Palestinians\u202fin the West Bank\u202fmust be protected, as required by law,\u202fand that perpetrators\u202fof violations\u202fmust be held accountable,\u201d OCHA said.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0UN human rights office, OHCHR<\/a>,\u00a0also\u00a0<\/strong>reported on<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0the death of a\u00a0critically ill infant in Ramallah governorate on Sunday<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The\u00a0four-month-old boy\u00a0died after Israeli forces refused to open a gate blocking the main entrance to his village, thus delaying his access to medical care while an ambulance was waiting on the other side.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Writing on social media,\u00a0OHCHR recalled that\u00a0last month, a seven-month-old\u00a0boy\u00a0was shot and killed by an Israeli soldier at a checkpoint.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cBoth deaths are senseless, and both are emblematic of an occupying power continuing to show utter disregard for the humanity<\/strong>\u00a0and rights of Palestinians living under occupation,\u201d\u00a0said Ajith Sunghay, Head of UN\u00a0human\u00a0rights in the OPT.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
