The Atlantic on Saturday republished a JD Vance essay that dismissed Donald Trump as \u201ccultural heroin\u201d exactly 10 years earlier, bringing back to the fore his evolving from a critic of the president to his vice-president.<\/p>\n
In an editor\u2019s note, the magazine said it was republishing the essay<\/a> on the occasion of its 10th anniversary \u2013 and the US\u2019s semiquincentennial \u2013 \u201cso that our readers can judge for themselves how well his assessment [of Trump] \u2026 has stood the test of time\u201d.<\/p>\n The original essay was published during Trump\u2019s first victorious presidential run, when Mike Pence was his running mate and before Vance entered politics. He worked at Mithril Capital Management, Peter Thiel\u2019s venture capital firm, at the time and had just published Hillbilly Elegy, a bestselling memoir of his upbringing in the Rust belt that also served as a social commentary on the white working class.<\/p>\n In the essay, Vance said many Americans turned to Trump as a \u201cpain reliever\u201d in the midst of a social crisis in which mounting distrust in the government and economic decline were coming to a head. He invoked the phrase \u201ccultural heroin\u201d to describe Trump\u2019s political appeal at the time \u2013 and said his supporters would eventually realize he was not the answer to their problems.<\/p>\n Trump offered \u201can easy escape from the pain\u201d, Vance wrote. \u201cTo every complex problem, he promises a simple solution.<\/p>\n \u201cHe never offers details for how these plans will work, because he can\u2019t. Trump\u2019s promises are the needle in America\u2019s collective vein.\u201d<\/p>\n Vance continued: \u201cHe makes some feel better for a bit. That was one day after attacking what he called the US\u2019s brewing \u201ccommunist menace\u201d as a democratic socialist political movement gained ground at the polls ahead of November\u2019s midterm elections, building on Zohran Mamdani\u2019s becoming New York City mayor in January.<\/p>\n Beside the essay republished by the Atlantic on Saturday, which quickly achieved virality online, Vance had once openly described himself as a self-described \u201cnever Trump guy\u201d and had even called him \u201cAmerica\u2019s Hitler\u201d. He said Trump was \u201cunfit\u201d for office and was \u201cleading the white working class to a very dark place\u201d.<\/p>\n Then he went on to change his tune dramatically when he ran for the US Senate in Ohio in 2022 and won with Trump\u2019s backing. He then became Trump\u2019s running mate for his winning 2024 White House campaign, with Vance saying he had a change of heart having witnessed the results of Trump\u2019s policies before his first presidency ended in defeat to Joe Biden.<\/p>\n Now a ferocious defender of the president, Vance is widely expected to vie to become Trump\u2019s successor, alongside the US secretary of state, Marco Rubio.<\/p>\n David Frum, a senior Atlantic editor who knew Vance early on in his political career, told NPR<\/a> in 2024 that the limits that politicians set for themselves and don\u2019t cross for the sake of their careers are telling.<\/p>\n \u201cI think he walked across it,\u201d Frum said of Vance during the election that year. \u201cI think he told us in advance what it was.
