There are plenty of reasons to embrace the holiday on your own term<\/p>\n
For many Black Americans, the Fourth of July is a day of reflection as much as celebration. While the nation\u2019s history includes painful chapters of slavery and inequality, the holiday also offers an opportunity to honor Black excellence, community, culture and the progress that continues to shape the American story. Whether you\u2019re gathering with family, supporting Black-owned businesses or attending events that celebrate the richness of the Black experience, there are plenty of reasons to embrace the holiday on your own terms. Here are seven things Black people can celebrate this Fourth of July.<\/p>\n
The\u00a0Atlanta Entertainment Basketball League (AEBL<\/a>)\u00a0officially tips off its 2026 season on\u00a0July 4, bringing elite men\u2019s and women\u2019s basketball, youth clinics, networking events, and community programming to Atlanta through Aug, 23. Since launching in 2013, the league has become a summertime institution, creating economic opportunities while investing in the city\u2019s next generation of athletes and leaders. \u00a0<\/p>\n Celebrity chef\u00a0Marcus Samuelsson\u2019s\u00a0Red Rooster Harlem<\/a> has partnered with NYC Tourism + Conventions and the NY\/NJ World Cup Host Committee for a\u00a0$26 \u201cFive Boroughs Winners Special\u201d\u00a0available through\u00a0July 19. Guests can enjoy a prix fixe meal while celebrating Harlem\u2019s food scene during the FIFA World Cup festivities.<\/p>\n The\u00a0ESSENCE Festival of Culture\u00a0returns to\u00a0New Orleans from July 3-5, once again transforming Fourth of July weekend into the nation\u2019s largest celebration of Black culture. The festival features concerts, speakers, Black-owned businesses, wellness programming, and networking opportunities for thousands of attendees. \u00a0<\/p>\n Running\u00a0July 3-5\u00a0in\u00a0Commodore Barry Park, the\u00a0International African Arts Festival\u00a0returns with three days of live music, dance, fashion, art, food vendors, and cultural performance<\/a>s representing Africa and the African diaspora. The free festival has been one of New York City\u2019s premier Black cultural celebrations for decades. \u00a0<\/p>\n Philadelphia\u2019s\u00a0Wawa Welcome America\u00a0festival runs through\u00a0July 4, uniquely connecting\u00a0Juneteenth and Independence Day\u00a0with educational programming<\/a>, concerts, museum events, and community celebrations that offer a broader perspective on freedom and American and Black American history. \u00a0<\/p>\n Detroit\u2019s\u00a0Shrine of the Black Madonna\u00a0hosts its annual\u00a0\u201cNot Our Independence Day\u201d\u00a0observance during the holiday weekend. The program features music, reflection, and a reading of Frederick Douglass\u2019 famous speech,\u00a0\u201cWhat to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?\u201d<\/em>\u00a0offering historical context and community dialogue. \u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n The\u00a0AfroComedy Independence Festival\u00a0takes place on\u00a0July 4\u00a0in\u00a0Lanham, Maryland, combining stand-up comedy, music, food, and community\u00a0for a celebration centered on\u00a0Black joy and culture.
