The effort is backed by the\u00a0Caribbean Community (CARICOM)\u00a0and follows the release of the<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/caricom.org\/caricom-ten-point-plan-for-reparatory-justice\/\">\u00a0CARICOM Reparations Commission<\/a>\u2018s\u00a0updated reparations manifesto in\u00a0June 2026.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Later this year, Jamaica will take the case for reparations directly to King Charles, lodging a formal petition.<\/p>\n<p>It is getting harder and harder for British institutions to maintain their favoured tactic of simply ignoring calls for repair.<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/zJJGqCYpze\">https:\/\/t.co\/zJJGqCYpze<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Bell Ribeiro-Addy MP (@BellRibeiroAddy) <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BellRibeiroAddy\/status\/2072372189744009474?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 1, 2026<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Britain has consistently rejected calls for slavery reparations, maintaining that it does not support financial compensation for the institution of slavery while acknowledging its historical role in the transatlantic slave trade.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking before Jamaica\u2019s Parliament on\u00a0June 30, 2026, Culture Minister\u00a0Olivia Grange\u00a0said\u00a0Sept. 6\u00a0was selected because it marks the anniversary of the\u00a01781\u00a0departure of the\u00a0Zong\u00a0slave ship from West Africa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe intend to petition King Charles on September 6 \u2014 a historic day,\u201d Grange said according to the outlet. \u201cOn this date in 1781, the Zong slave ship departed West Africa for Jamaica with 442 enslaved Africans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grange said approximately\u00a0140 enslaved Africans\u00a0were thrown overboard during the voyage before the ship arrived in Jamaica on\u00a0Dec. 21, 1781, an event historians widely recognize as one of the most infamous atrocities of the transatlantic slave trade.<\/p>\n<p>The petition also cites Britain\u2019s compensation of\u00a0slave owners\u00a0following emancipation in\u00a01834, while formerly enslaved Africans received no financial restitution and were instead required to complete a period of unpaid apprenticeship. Grange said Britain paid\u00a0\u00a320 million\u00a0to compensate enslavers through a government-backed loan that was not fully repaid until\u00a02015.<\/p>\n<p>Laleta Davis Mattis, chair of Jamaica\u2019s National Council on Reparations, called the petition \u201ca significant milestone in our long pursuit of reparatory justice,\u201d while crediting Jamaican and British legal experts with developing the initiative.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Chair\u00a0Bert Samuels\u00a0said the country\u2019s legal position has been strengthened by the\u00a0United Nations General Assembly\u2019s March 25, 2026, resolution\u00a0recognizing the transatlantic trafficking of enslaved Africans as a crime against humanity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have learned from the 300-year struggle for freedom itself,\u201d Samuels said. \u201cPeople who have been tied down for three centuries\u00a0into\u00a0slavery must have felt hopeless at times.
