For me, that is the true path for future generations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James Beltis, sociologist and friend of Antoinette Duclaire<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Organized by the women\u2019s rights organization N\u00e8g\u00e8s Mawon, the commemoration celebrated Duclaire\u2019s legacy as one of Haiti\u2019s leading feminist voices and highlighted her unwavering commitment to women\u2019s rights, civic engagement and social justice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her killing, along with that of reporter Diego Charles on June 29, 2021, however, remains emblematic of Haiti\u2019s broader crisis of impunity. Five years later, no one has been brought to justice for the double assassination.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Again, Duclaire and Charles\u2019 case joins a growing list of unresolved high-profile killings that have haunted Haiti in recent years, including those of journalists Brignol Lindor, Jean Dominique and Jacques Roche, publicist Fran\u00e7ois \u201cFanfan\u201d Latour, attorney Monferrier Dorval and President Jovenel Mo\u00efse. For many Haitians, the lack of accountability in these cases reflects a justice system weakened by political instability, insecurity and institutional dysfunction, leaving victims\u2019 families waiting years for answers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ceremony featured a memorial displaying Duclaire\u2019s photographs surrounded by candles and flowers. Photo by Juhakenson Blaise\/The Haitian Times.\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_button-next swiper-button-next swiper-button-white\" role=\"button\"\/><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Pause Slideshow\" class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_button-pause\" role=\"button\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speakers described Duclaire as a symbol of courage and collective commitment to women\u2019s rights, calling her a martyr for the cause.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of the event, N\u00e8g\u00e8s Mawon and the feminist organization MARIJ\u00c0N launched the Antoinette Duclaire Scholarship to support and mentor a new generation of young women leaders.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-investigation-remains-stalled\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Investigation remains stalled<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Five years after the killings, participants said they still have no information about the status of the investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Duclaire and Charles, an investigative reporter working for Radio Vision 2000, were ambushed and fatally shot in the Christ-Roi neighborhood of Port-au-Prince. Duclaire was struck multiple times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the time of her death, Duclaire was a member of the opposition political party Matrice Lib\u00e9ration and an outspoken critic of both the administrations of Michel Martelly and Jovenel Mo\u00efse.
