The High-Level Committee on Demographic Changes met Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday and said it would soon begin visits to states and Union Territories to gather first-hand, ground-level details, officials said.<\/p>\n
The committee was formed by the central government to study population shifts caused by illegal immigration and abnormal migration.<\/p>\n
According to an official statement, the committee has prepared a detailed questionnaire to seek relevant information from states and UTs in advance so that the visits are more meaningful and interactive.<\/p>\n
Appreciating the strategy, Shah directed Home Secretary Govind Mohan to provide all possible assistance to the committee in its day-to-day work and during its visits to states and UTs. He also suggested that the committee submit its recommendations at the earliest.<\/p>\n
The committee is chaired by Justice Prakash Prabhakar Navlekar (Retired). Its members include Census Commissioner Mrityunjay Kumar Narayan and three distinguished persons \u2014 Durga Shankar Mishra (Retired IAS), Balaji Srivastava (Retired IPS), and Shamika Ravi, a member of PMEAC, the statement said.<\/p>\n
“Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi had announced the ‘High-powered Demography Mission’ on August 15, 2025. The Government of India has constituted a high-level committee to study the demographic changes arising from illegal immigration and other abnormal reasons, and to suggest measures to deal with these demographic changes,” the statement said.<\/p>\n
“This high-level committee will scientifically assess the demographic changes occurring in various parts of the country due to illegal immigration and other abnormal reasons, analyse their causes, and recommend appropriate policy, legislative, and administrative measures,” the statement said.<\/p>\n
In sum, the committee has begun its work by briefing Shah, planning visits to states and UTs, and preparing a questionnaire, while the home minister has asked officials to extend full support and urged it to give its recommendations at the earliest.<\/p>\n
