The new\u202fBlueprint for strengthening responses to fungal disease and antifungal resistance<\/em><\/a>, issued on Tuesday, sets out practical steps to improve prevention, diagnosis,\u00a0treatment\u00a0and surveillance.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Fungal diseases\u00a0affect more than\u202f300 million people each year<\/strong>\u202fand are associated with high mortality, long-term\u00a0illness\u00a0and major losses in health and productivity worldwide.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Growing global threat<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n

They range from common conditions such as ringworm and nail infections to severe invasive diseases that can be deadly<\/strong>, especially for people with weakened immune systems, those receiving intensive care, people living with HIV, transplant\u00a0recipients\u00a0and\u00a0cancer patients.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Meanwhile,\u00a0antifungal resistance is a growing threat, driven in part by the widespread use of antifungal\u00a0medications<\/strong>\u00a0and their analogues across human,\u00a0animal\u00a0and plant health, as well as environmental exposure to antifungal chemicals.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Despite this toll, WHO<\/a> said fungal diseases are often missing from national health\u00a0treatment\u00a0policies, global burden-of-disease estimates and most strategies on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), universal health coverage and\u00a0One Health\u00a0\u2013\u00a0the UN agency\u2019s\u00a0initiative for action across human, animal, plant and environmental health.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2018A concrete path forward\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n

The\u00a0blueprint comes\u00a0roughly a\u00a0month after\u00a0WHO\u2019s decision-making body, the World Health Assembly<\/a>,\u00a0adopted an updated\u00a0Global Action Plan on AMR<\/a>\u00a0which\u00a0occurs when\u00a0bacteria, viruses,\u00a0fungi\u00a0and parasites\u00a0evolve and become resistant to the drugs designed to kill them, making infections harder to treat.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It\u00a0remains\u00a0one of the\u00a0top global\u00a0health and development\u00a0threats.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Updated Global Action Plan on AMR approved by the\u00a079th\u00a0World Health Assembly\u00a0recognised\u00a0that antifungal resistance is an integral part of the AMR challenge \u2013 and\u00a0one we can no longer afford to overlook<\/strong>,\u201d\u00a0said Dr Jean Pierre Nyemazi, interim Director of WHO\u2019s Department of Antimicrobial Resistance.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He added that the Blueprint \u201cgives countries a concrete path forward.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Addressing critical gaps<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n

The\u00a0Blueprint\u00a0builds on WHO\u2019s first\u202f<\/strong>Fungal Priority Pathogens List<\/strong><\/a>, published in 2022, which\u00a0identified\u00a019 fungal pathogens or pathogen groups\u00a0requiring\u00a0urgent research,\u00a0development\u00a0and public health action<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

It\u00a0was developed through a multi-stage process and consultations with more than\u202f150 experts\u202ffrom all WHO regions, including specialists in clinical mycology, diagnostics, stewardship, surveillance, regulatory policy, public\u00a0health\u00a0and patient advocacy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The\u00a0aim is\u00a0to help countries address critical gaps in knowledge, diagnosis, treatment, surveillance, research, and workforce capacities, particularly in low-resource settings.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n

Practical framework for response<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n

The\u00a0WHO blueprint prioritizes interventions around four interlinked domains, providing a framework for implementation:\u00a0<\/p>\n

Domain 1<\/strong>\u00a0focuses on public health and health systems, including strengthening awareness and readiness, antifungal stewardship\u00a0programmes, workforce training, and infection prevention and control.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Domain 2<\/strong>\u00a0concerns\u00a0expanding\u00a0equitable\u00a0access to quality-assured antifungal medicines and diagnostics, while supporting research, innovation, and market.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n

Domain 3<\/strong>\u00a0prioritises\u00a0strengthening laboratory systems\u00a0and\u00a0 surveillance\u00a0to\u00a0support clinical management,\u00a0inform\u00a0public health decision-making and enhance outbreak preparedness\u00a0<\/p>\n

Domain 4<\/strong>\u00a0addresses social and environmental drivers, including\u00a0agricultural,\u00a0environmental\u00a0and One Health factors that can contribute to\u00a0fungal disease epidemiology and\u00a0antifungal resistance.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cFungal disease and antifungal resistance remain\u00a0an under\u00a0addressed priority across national health plans, AMR strategies, and surveillance systems.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
