The decision follows broader efforts by the Trump administration to roll back humanitarian immigration programs affecting migrants from countries including Venezuela, Cuba, Afghanistan, and Ukraine.

Immigration advocates warn that losing legal work authorization could have significant economic consequences. FWD.us, a nonprofit immigration advocacy organization, estimates that roughly 600,000 working adults have already lost legal status or work authorization since last year, with millions more potentially affected if additional humanitarian programs are ended.

Many of those impacted are professionals who have spent years building careers in the United States.

Bloomberg highlighted the story of a Haitian nurse who has lived in the U.S. since shortly after Haiti’s devastating 2010 earthquake. After spending thousands of dollars pursuing asylum and building a career in healthcare, she now faces the possibility of losing her legal authorization to work following the Supreme Court’s ruling.

Other immigrants interviewed for the report include accountants, teachers, paralegals, and financial professionals who say they have already lost jobs or fear they soon will, despite years of contributing to the U.S. economy.

Labor economists say many immigrants are unlikely to leave the country immediately if they lose legal status. Instead, some may seek employment in the informal economy, where jobs often pay less, offer fewer protections, and do not match workers’ education or professional qualifications.

The changes are also creating concerns for employers. Industries such as healthcare, construction, hospitality, and elder care—which rely heavily on immigrant workers—have reported staffing shortages as more employees lose work authorization.

Supporters of the administration’s policy argue that Temporary Protected Status was always intended to be temporary and that ending the program could create more employment opportunities and improve wages for American workers. Critics, however, argue that removing work authorization from long-term residents who have paid taxes and built careers could disrupt businesses, separate families, and create additional economic challenges.

For many Haitian families, the Supreme Court’s decision represents more than an immigration policy change. It raises difficult questions about employment, financial stability, and the future of individuals who have spent years contributing to their communities while living under temporary legal protections.

As legal challenges continue and lawmakers debate possible legislative solutions, thousands of Haitian immigrants remain uncertain about what comes next—and whether they will be able to continue working legally in the country they have called home for years.

The U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision allowing the Trump administration to move forward with ending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for approximately 350,000 Haitians has sparked growing concerns about what comes next—not only for immigrant families, but also for the American workforce.
