\n\u2014just the shape it arrived in,
\n\u00a0 \u00a0the first spark of a thing
\n\u00a0 \u00a0still warm from its source,
\n\u00a0 \u00a0not yet glancing sideways
\n\u00a0 \u00a0to see who\u2019s listening.<\/p>\n
\nthe sense that a word won\u2019t travel far
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0unless it\u2019s steadied,
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 angled,
\ngiven a surface someone else
\ncan place their hand on
\n\u00a0 \u00a0\u2014a bridge that could be crossed
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 from both directions,
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 and still hold its form
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 on the way across.<\/p>\n
\njust enough structure
\nto keep it from faltering
\nas it moves.<\/p>\n
\nholding the sentence like a fragile tool,
\nwondering whether to keep it close
\nor send it outward.<\/p>\n
\nis a kind of shelter,
\nand to speak so another can meet me
\nis a kind of risk.<\/p>\n
\nshape the truth just enough
\nthat it can leave the room
\nwithout losing its centre,
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 but not so much
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 that it forgets where it came from.<\/p>\n
