{"id":31026,"date":"2026-06-27T20:09:50","date_gmt":"2026-06-28T00:09:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/design-providers.com\/rise\/europe-heatwave-breaks-records-as-un-agencies-ramp-up-health-warnings\/"},"modified":"2026-06-27T20:09:50","modified_gmt":"2026-06-28T00:09:50","slug":"europe-heatwave-breaks-records-as-un-agencies-ramp-up-health-warnings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/design-providers.com\/rise\/europe-heatwave-breaks-records-as-un-agencies-ramp-up-health-warnings\/","title":{"rendered":"Europe heatwave breaks records as UN agencies ramp up health warnings"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The extreme heat is also\u00a0impacting\u00a0economic activities, infrastructure, agriculture and ecosystems, the UN weather agency\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/wmo.int\/media\/news\/records-fall-extreme-heat-grips-europe\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/wmo.int\/media\/news\/records-fall-extreme-heat-grips-europe\">said<\/a> on Thursday, providing an overview of the situation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>France recorded its hottest day on record on 24 June, with an average national temperature of 30.0\u00b0C, according to the national meteorological service\u00a0M\u00e9t\u00e9o-France, beating a record set only the previous day and surpassing earlier national records from July 2019 and August 2003.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0the western town of\u00a0Pulluau, temperatures climbed to 43.8\u00b0C. Overnight temperatures also reached a new\u00a0national\u00a0high. Authorities issued top-level red alerts for a\u00a0record\u00a058 departments, covering most of the country, and warned of increased risk of forest fires\u00a0due amid worsening\u00a0drought.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Drowning deaths underscore heat dangers<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/public.wmo.int\/en\">WMO<\/a> noted that 40 people\u00a0reportedly died\u00a0in drowning accidents in France, underlining the dangers associated with the life-threatening heat.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Neighbouring\u00a0Spain\u00a0also\u00a0recorded its hottest June days on\u00a0record (23 and 24\u00a0June)\u00a0with temperatures above 40\u00b0C in several locations, according to the national meteorological agency AEMET.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0United Kingdom\u2019s\u00a0met\u00a0office issued a red extreme heat warning for 24\u00a0and\u00a025 June and reported a provisional new June daily\u00a0high\u00a0of 36.1\u00b0C\u00a0at\u00a0Gosport, in southern England, on 24 June.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile,\u00a0Germany\u2019s national weather service\u00a0has also\u00a0issued widespread red alerts, including for Bonn,\u00a0Frankfurt\u00a0and Cologne, while\u00a0three cities in Switzerland\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Geneva,\u00a0Basel\u00a0and Zurich\u00a0\u2013\u00a0were also under red alert.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>\u2018Fingerprints of the climate\u00a0crisis\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>UN climate chief Simon Stiell\u00a0weighed in\u00a0on the extreme temperatures in Europe, saying\u00a0the \u201csavage heatwave has the fingerprints of the climate crisis all over it\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/simonstiell\/status\/2070092702360752398?s=20\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/simonstiell\/status\/2070092702360752398?s=20\">warned<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cuntil humanity stops burning coal, oil and gas, extreme heat will keep getting worse,\u201d highlighting the need for countries to accelerate the shift to renewable energy, protect forests and boost climate resilience.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The heatwave is expected to spread across large parts of western,\u00a0central\u00a0and southern Europe over the next two weeks, according to a regional climate monitoring\u00a0centre\u00a0that is part of a WMO network.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0forecast\u00a0indicates\u00a0temperatures between 3\u00b0C and 10\u00b0C above the weekly average for this time of year\u00a0while daily maximum temperatures above 35\u00b0C are expected in many areas, with some locations in the southwest exceeding 40\u00b0C.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Night brings no relief<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Many places are also likely to experience\u00a0so-called\u00a0\u201ctropical nights\u201d,\u00a0when\u00a0nighttime\u00a0temperatures do not fall below 20\u00b0C\u00a0(68\u00b0F). These conditions, which become increasingly common during heatwaves and particularly in cities,\u00a0increase the risk of heat stress, forest fires and, in some areas, strong thunderstorms with hail.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nighttime heat can be especially dangerous because it prevents the body from recovering, said Armel Castellan,\u00a0an\u00a0extreme heat services technical advisor\u00a0at the\u00a0climate and health joint office\u00a0of\u00a0WMO\u00a0and\u00a0the World\u00a0Health Organization (<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/en\/\">WHO<\/a>).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is why, when assessing the health impact of a heatwave, minimum temperatures can be more telling than the peak afternoon high,\u201d he explained.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cA day that reaches 38\u00b0C but drops to 18\u00b0C overnight is\u00a0very different\u00a0from a day that reaches 36\u00b0C and stays above 25\u00b0C\u00a0through\u00a0the night. The second scenario carries a much higher health risk.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Heat stress is a leading cause of weather-related deaths,\u00a0WHO\u00a0said,\u00a0estimating that\u00a0some\u00a0489,000 heat-related deaths\u00a0occurred\u00a0each year between 2000 and 2019.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                  <span class=\"author\">\u00a9 Unsplash\/Nathan Hurst<\/span><br \/>\n                          <span class=\"caption\">Extreme heat is impacting millions of people around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The heat is on<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0deadly\u00a0European\u00a0heatwave formed the backdrop to\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/en\/content\/sg\/statements\/2026-06-23\/secretary-generals-special-address-london-climate-action-week-delivered?_gl=1%2A1hbit0a%2A_gcl_aw%2AR0NMLjE3ODAwNjE5MDYuRUFJYUlRb2JDaE1JOUp6UHFNX2VsQU1WRkZ6X0FSMG44Z09MRUFBWUFTQUFFZ0xWWHZEX0J3RQ..%2A_gcl_au%2AMzcxNzgzNzg3LjE3NzkzNzI4OTY.%2A_ga%2AMTc3MzQ1MDc4MC4xNzgyMzk1ODAx%2A_ga_S5EKZKSB78%2AczE3ODI0MDAxNDAkbzIkZzEkdDE3ODI0MDIyMDEkajM4JGwwJGgw\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/en\/content\/sg\/statements\/2026-06-23\/secretary-generals-special-address-london-climate-action-week-delivered?_gl=1%2A1hbit0a%2A_gcl_aw%2AR0NMLjE3ODAwNjE5MDYuRUFJYUlRb2JDaE1JOUp6UHFNX2VsQU1WRkZ6X0FSMG44Z09MRUFBWUFTQUFFZ0xWWHZEX0J3RQ..%2A_gcl_au%2AMzcxNzgzNzg3LjE3NzkzNzI4OTY.%2A_ga%2AMTc3MzQ1MDc4MC4xNzgyMzk1ODAx%2A_ga_S5EKZKSB78%2AczE3ODI0MDAxNDAkbzIkZzEkdDE3ODI0MDIyMDEkajM4JGwwJGgw\">a\u00a0major keynote speech<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0UN\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/\">Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres<\/a> at London Climate Action Week on\u00a0Monday.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have just lived through the eleven hottest years ever recorded,\u201d he said. \u201cAround the world,\u202fClimate disasters are becoming more frequent, more destructive and more costly.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He warned that El Ni\u00f1o\u00a0risks \u201cturning up the heat\u201d,\u00a0disrupting food and water systems and hitting the most vulnerable people\u00a0the\u00a0hardest.\u202f\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>El Ni\u00f1o,\u00a0a naturally occurring weather pattern, is\u00a0characterised\u00a0by a warming of ocean surface temperatures in the central and eastern Equatorial Pacific.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Extreme heat is expected to occur with increasing frequency and intensity as the climate changes, WMO said.\u00a0The UN agency recently issued\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/wmo.int\/news\/media-centre\/wmo-prepare-el-nino\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/wmo.int\/news\/media-centre\/wmo-prepare-el-nino\">an\u00a0update<\/a>\u00a0which said\u00a0that El Ni\u00f1o\u00a0would affect weather and climate patterns in the coming months, although impacts are typically greater outside Europe.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>WMO is among UN agencies supporting\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/climatechange\/extreme-heat\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/climatechange\/extreme-heat\">the\u00a0Secretary-General\u2019s Call to Action on Extreme Heat<\/a>, issued in July 2024. It\u00a0urges countries to protect vulnerable people, safeguard workers, use data and science to\u00a0boost the resilience of both economies and\u00a0societies\u00a0and limit global temperature rise.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>WMO is supporting the Call to Action through the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/earlywarningsforall.org\/site\/early-warnings-all\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/earlywarningsforall.org\/site\/early-warnings-all\">Early Warnings for All<\/a>\u00a0initiative,\u00a0aimed at ensuring\u00a0that people\u00a0everywhere\u00a0receive\u00a0timely\u00a0warnings and clear information on how to protect themselves before dangerous heat\u00a0or other hazards\u00a0strike.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Alongside WHO,\u00a0it has developed guidance on extreme heat and heat-health early warning systems which support\u00a0national plans and response efforts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As the heatwave shifts across Europe, UN agencies\u00a0are\u00a0stressing that early warnings must lead to early action,\u00a0which includes\u00a0protecting people during the\u00a0hottest hours, preparing health services, reducing heat
