Signed on\u00a026\u00a0June\u00a01945, the Charter\u00a0is the founding document of the United Nations.\u00a0It\u00a0codified the major principles of international relations and outlined the UN\u2019s goals of\u00a0maintaining\u00a0peace and security, reaffirming fundamental human rights,\u00a0establishing\u00a0the conditions for cooperation between states, and promoting social progress.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Since then,\u00a026\u00a0June\u00a0has been recognized as UN Charter<\/a> Day. The theme of this year\u2019s commemoration is \u201cBetter Together: One Charter, One Future.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n UN Photo\/Yould<\/span> At the General Assembly meeting on Friday, Mr. Guterres, Ms.\u00a0Baerbock\u00a0and several Member States renewed their commitments to the Charter\u2019s principles.\u00a0<\/p>\n The commemoration came as the UN faces growing criticism over its ability to prevent conflicts and address global crises, with both speakers arguing that current challenges\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0the need for stronger multilateral cooperation rather than its abandonment.\u00a0<\/p>\n The Secretary-General said<\/a>\u00a0the UN\u2019s founding promise of cooperation and dignity is under immense strain, citing wars of territorial expansion, civilians being targeted, broken ceasefires and selective enforcement of international law as examples of global challenges.\u00a0<\/p>\n Mr. Guterres applauded the UN\u2019s accomplishments, including peacekeeping, humanitarian aid, vaccination campaigns, conflict mediation, international\u00a0justice\u00a0and development\u00a0assistance.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cThe United Nations has never been perfect, but it is irreplaceable<\/strong>,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n He added that the Charter is \u201cnot an \u00e0 la carte menu,\u201d arguing that countries cannot selectively apply its principles on sovereignty, international\u00a0law\u00a0and human rights.\u00a0<\/p>\n Responding to criticisms, Mr. Guterres and Ms. Baerbock called for reform but stressed that this reform should strengthen multilateralism and preserve the UN, rather than weakening it.\u00a0<\/p>\n Ms. Baerbock argued<\/a> the UN\u2019s existence itself is \u201ca miracle of humanity,\u201d noting that today\u2019s 193\u00a0Member\u00a0States would struggle to create such an institution from scratch.\u00a0<\/p>\n She also recognized the UN\u2019s shortcomings, including its failure to prevent conflicts in Sudan, Ukraine,\u00a0Gaza\u00a0and Lebanon, and argued that the\u00a0UN80 reform initiative<\/a>\u00a0is an opportunity to make the organization more \u201cagile and efficient.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n In her speech, Ms. Baerbock celebrated achievements such as UNICEF<\/a> immunization campaigns that have saved more than 150 million children\u2019s lives, decades of peacekeeping missions, expanded access to education and healthcare, and humanitarian assistance around the world, arguing that international cooperation remains essential to achieve these goals.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cMultilateralism has not failed,\u201d Ms. Baerbock said. \u201cMultilateralism works every day when humanitarian workers\u00a0are delivering\u00a0food even before sunrise in a crisis. Multilateralism works every day even if the Security Council<\/a> is\u00a0blocked, when\u00a0peacekeepers protect civilians<\/strong>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Mr. Guterres and Ms. Baerbock framed the
