Credit: SJU Men’s Rowing-Twitter\/X<\/span> <\/p>\n If you looked closely during the 1720s\u200a, you might see a young man swimming routinely in the Schulkyll River<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n It wasn\u2019t much of a surprise since water has been important to Philadelphia since the very beginning.<\/strong><\/p>\n Long before the European colonization that led to the creation of William Penn\u2019s Philadelphia between the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers, Native Americans used the land and rivers for both sustenance and recreation.<\/p>\n St. Joseph\u2019s University is winning on the water once again<\/a>, too. At the 2026 IRA National Championships<\/a>, \u200athe Hawks made it to the Final Three. On the peaceful Lake Natoma\u200a, St. Joseph\u2019s had a very good showing in the two-thousand-meter.<\/p>\n Credit: SJU Men\u2019s Rowing-Twitter\/X<\/em><\/p>\n The Hawks finished just a shade behind Brown University<\/a>, scoring second place with a final clocked time of 6:43.150. Temple would also beat out La Salle<\/a> in the D-final to become ranked 19th in the nation.<\/p>\n One year after St. Joe\u2019s Prep won a National Championship<\/a> at Sarasota\u200a\u2014\u200aThe Prep won the boys senior eight\u200a<\/a>\u2014\u200aat the Ninety-Ninth Stotesbury Cup Regatta in May 2026. In the same month, \u200athe Hawks achieved the Varsity Eight Petite Final at the 2026 Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta.<\/p>\n It\u2019s been two years since Drexel men\u2019s rowing dominated<\/a> the Dad Vail Regatta with a resounding win in 2024. This weekend, that championship mentality prevailed yet again as Drexel captured both the men\u2019s point trophy and the overall trophy with a time of nearly five and a half minutes. Last year\u2019s champion (Temple) placed second in the event<\/a>.<\/p>\n And that young man who swam the Schulkyll regularly?<\/strong><\/p>\n A man who would influence swimming programs to this day?
