\u201cGiven the sensitivity of the situation and the fact we’ve been close before, we will hold off on any comment, but\u00a0we are encouraged by\u00a0the general tone of what we’re hearing<\/strong>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Pakistan has been a mediator in the war\u00a0that\u00a0erupted in late February\u00a0after the\u00a0US and Israeli\u00a0bombed military and nuclear sites in\u00a0Iran, and Tehran launched\u00a0subsequent\u00a0attacks on\u00a0US targets in the Gulf region.\u00a0<\/p>\n The crisis is part of\u00a0the\u00a0wider conflict in the Middle East and Gulf region which\u00a0UN Secretary-General\u00a0Ant\u00f3nio\u00a0Guterres\u00a0has\u00a0repeatedly condemned.\u00a0<\/p>\n It\u00a0has strangled shipping in the Strait of Hormuz \u2013 responsible for\u00a0roughly a\u00a0quarter of global seaborne oil trade<\/strong>\u00a0and significant volumes of liquefied natural gas as well as\u00a0fertilisers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n The disruption has caused ripple effects across the region and around the world, with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO<\/a>)\u00a0recently warning<\/a>\u00a0that it \u201ccould trigger a severe global food price crisis within six to 12 months.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Thousands of seafarers are stuck on ships in the Strait, some of which have come under deadly fire.
