Brinkema said she would lift her order if acting attorney general Todd Blanche and treasury secretary Scott Bessent filed a declaration under penalty of perjury that the fund was not moving forward in the next week. The FBI should immediately make public any and all activities around these raids in Ohio. For years, Ohio has had safe and secure elections that have been administered in a bipartisan fashion. Any attempt to intimidate Ohio voters is wrong, and will not work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Share<\/p>\n<p>Updated at\u00a014.53 EDT<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"dcr-1wl2b6o\">Judge denies Kennedy Center request for pause in ruling ordering removal of Trump&#8217;s name from building<\/h2>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A judge has denied a request from the <strong>Kennedy Center<\/strong> to pause a ruling that had ordered <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong>\u2019s name removed from the building by today\u2019s deadline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Trump\u2019s hand-picked board at the Kennedy Center had mounted the last-ditch effort to keep his name on the facade of the building this morning following a vote yesterday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">US district judge <strong>Christopher Cooper<\/strong> ruled on 29 May that Trump\u2019s name was illegally added to the iconic Washington performing arts facility. Cooper said that only Congress could institute a change to the Kennedy Center\u2019s name and ordered references to Trump to be removed within 14 days (which takes us up to today).<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He also blocked the administration from closing the cultural and arts venue for major renovations that had been planned to start in July and last for two years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The board vote marked a shift from a 4 June memo to staff from the Kennedy Center\u2019s office of general counsel which said email signatures, letterhead and other documents must reflect the name as \u201cThe John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts\u201d or \u201cKennedy Center\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Kennedy Center\u2019s website dropped Trump\u2019s name earlier this week in compliance with the ruling. At a news conference this week, Comer said that the decision was based on the testimony of <strong>Lesley Groff<\/strong>, Epstein\u2019s longtime assistant, who testified before the committee on Tuesday, as well as \u201ca meeting that I had afterwards with several of the Epstein survivors\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe will have questions for him and we will give him an opportunity to come in and answer several questions that arose yesterday based on Ms Groff\u2019s testimony and some things that someone of the Epstein survivors said,\u201d Comer said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The transcript of Groff\u2019s testimony has not yet been released by the committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Dershowitz, a Harvard law school professor who was a member of Epstein\u2019s legal team that negotiated Epstein\u2019s controversial 2008 plea deal, has said in recent interviews that he was willing to testify before the committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In an interview with the Guardian earlier this week, Dershowitz said that he is \u201cnot a reluctant witness, I wanted to testify, as I said from day one, I want the truth to come out\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cEverything I did in relation to the Epstein case, I\u2019m proud of,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Dershowitz has faced scrutiny over the years for his past ties to Epstein. And in 2014, <strong>Virginia Giuffre<\/strong>, an Epstein survivor, alleged that Dershowitz sexually assaulted her when she was a teenager as part of Epstein\u2019s sex-trafficking operation. He maintains he feels the most important factor in his loss to Paxton was low voter turnout, \u201cbut certainly the president\u2019s endorsement had an impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Having come to terms with his defeat, he joins a handful of other Senate Republicans not seeking re-election or defeated in primaries at Trump\u2019s behest who now have added room to manouevre politically. \u201cIt does give some of us a little more freedom, and certainly leverage,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Cornyn told the Times he is not a \u201cwounded bear\u201d seeking revenge, but said that Trump is hurting the Republican party with self-serving decisions and by insisting on absolute loyalty. <strong>The president is ultimately setting himself up for a midterm \u201cdisaster\u201d that would pave the way for \u201cthe most miserable two years of his life\u201d<\/strong>, Cornyn said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He also told the NYT that the provision granting Trump, his family and his businesses immunity for IRS audits needs to be overturned. <strong>\u201cI think that\u2019s a terrible mistake,\u201d Cornyn said. \u201cThe president needs to be treated like everybody else.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Despite his self-assessed \u201c99.3%\u201d voting record in line with the president, Trump threw him under the bus. If an American is talking to a non-American target living abroad, their communications can get swept up too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Privacy advocates say that while the law is intended to surveil foreigners outside the US, t<strong>he federal government uses this loophole to spy without warrants on Americans, an unconstitutional practice<\/strong>. They, in turn, blame House speaker <strong>Mike Johnson<\/strong> for tanking repeated attempts to extend the program by taking a \u201cmy way or the highway approach\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">What happens now? Well, <strong>government surveillance under section 702 can actually still continue through March 2027, because it operates through year-long certifications approved by a special federal court.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Some lawmakers are worried about a statutory lapse and the program \u201cgoing dark\u201d \u2013 and the Trump administration has accused Democrats of playing politics with national security by blocking its renewal over Pulte\u2019s appointment. Yet <strong>there is no scientific evidence that the procedure works<\/strong> \u2013 the most comprehensive clinical trial staged so far, a placebo experiment conducted by <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpeds.com\/article\/S0022-3476(20)30334-6\/abstract\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Duke University<\/a>, found insignificant benefits for most of the 180 children tested.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The <strong>US Food and Drug Administration<\/strong> (FDA) directly <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/vaccines-blood-biologics\/consumers-biologics\/important-patient-and-consumer-information-about-regenerative-medicine-therapies\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">cautions parents<\/a> that <strong>if they are being offered stem cell treatments outside an approved clinical trial, \u201cyou are likely being deceived and offered a product illegally\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Though the Duke trial found minimal safety concerns with properly administered stem cell infusions, authorities continue to highlight the potential risks of under-regulated therapies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>The FDA warned in 2021 that it had received reports of complications following applications of umbilical cord stem cells and other related unapproved products leading to \u201cblindness, tumor formation, infections and more\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In his 16 months as the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services within the Trump administration, Kennedy has undercut established scientific endeavors. He has fired thousands of federal health officials, dismissed longstanding <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/29\/health\/autism-panel-kennedy-iacc.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">scientific advisers<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/trump-administration-cut-autism-related-research-by-26-so-far-2025-2025-05-16\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">defunded $31m<\/a> in autism-related research and attempted to shrink the recommended list of childhood vaccinations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">At the same time, largely unnoticed, he has given his backing to alternative health providers moving to fill the gap.
