\nwhere the mannequins wear my metaphors,

\nI used to think the words were a kind of weather \u2014
\nblowing in from nowhere,
\nsoaking me through for the sheer joy of it.
\nNow they arrive in invoices,
\nin neat little deadlines,
\nin the voice of an editor who says love the piece,
\ncan you make it more clickable?<\/p>\n
\nPoems for money, no kicks for free,
\npay up for the rhythm, pay up for the key.
\nEvery verse on the table, every rhyme on display \u2014
\nyou want the words, you\u2019ve got to pay.<\/p>\n
\nOut there, the buskers still play for coins and kisses,
\nbut in here it\u2019s all contracts and clauses,
\nthe slow bleed of the soul into a spreadsheet.
\nThe kicks aren\u2019t free anymore \u2014
\nthey\u2019re itemised, taxed,
\nand filed under miscellaneous inspiration.<\/p>\n
\nAin\u2019t no freebies in this poetry game,
\neach line\u2019s got a price, each stanza a name.
\nCoins in the jar if you want that fire \u2014
\nart costs sweat, and sweat ain\u2019t hire\u2011by\u2011the\u2011hour.<\/p>\n
\nStill, I keep at it.
\nBecause sometimes, between the brief and the bill,
\na line will slip the leash \u2014
\na wild\u2011eyed thing that doesn\u2019t care who\u2019s paying,
\nthat runs straight for the horizon,
\ndragging me with it,
\nreminding me why I ever opened my mouth
\nin the first place.<\/p>\n
\nNo kicks for free, no muse on loan,
