{"id":29060,"date":"2025-09-08T11:09:02","date_gmt":"2025-09-08T15:09:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/design-providers.com\/rise\/un-rights-chief-denounces-glorification-of-violence-and-attack-on-rule-of-law\/"},"modified":"2025-09-08T11:09:03","modified_gmt":"2025-09-08T15:09:03","slug":"un-rights-chief-denounces-glorification-of-violence-and-attack-on-rule-of-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/design-providers.com\/rise\/un-rights-chief-denounces-glorification-of-violence-and-attack-on-rule-of-law\/","title":{"rendered":"UN rights chief denounces \u2018glorification of violence\u2019 and attack on rule of law"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\u201cNo one is safe when human rights are under attack,\u201d Mr. T\u00fcrk told the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/HRBodies\/HRC\/Pages\/Home.aspx\">Human Rights Council<\/a>, warning that the <strong>rules of war \u201care being shredded\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome States are becoming an extension of their ruler\u2019s personal power,\u201d he insisted.<\/p>\n<p>In his customary address to the UN\u2019s top rights forum at the beginning of a new session in Geneva, the High Commissioner for Human Rights decried that \u201cpro-war propaganda is everywhere\u201d, from military parades to \u201cramped-up rhetoric\u201d from leaders.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cSadly, there are no peace parades or ministries of peace<\/strong>, he stressed, while calling for countries to stand firm against the growing \u201cerosion\u201d of international law.<\/p>\n<p>The High Commissioner also defended the importance of standing behind multilateral accords as \u201cthe foundation of peace, our global order and our daily lives, from trade rules to the global internet, to our fundamental rights\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>World order at risk<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Today, governments \u201care disregarding, disrespecting and disengaging\u201d the existing rules-based world order that was established after 1945 to prevent another world war, the UN rights chief insisted, in a call for accountability.<\/p>\n<p>The danger is that when States ignore violations of the law,<strong> \u201cthey become normalised,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>Mr. T\u00fcrk said.<strong> \u201cWhen States apply the law inconsistently, they undermine the legal order everywhere.<\/strong> It is time for States to wake up and to act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Condemning the continued illegal detention of United Nations staff in Yemen as a \u201cdirect attack on the UN system\u201d, Mr. T\u00fcrk also called the United States\u2019 withdrawal \u201cfrom the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/process-and-meetings\/the-paris-agreement\/the-paris-agreement\">Paris Agreement<\/a> and from global bodies, including this Council\u2026deeply regrettable\u201d, noting that other States were following suit.<\/p>\n<p>The High Commissioner also warned of the negative consequences of the decision by Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland to leave the Ottowa Treaty on land mines, while identifying the\u00a0\u201cnew trend of disparaging\u201d the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/development-agenda\/\"\/><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/development-agenda\/\">2030 Agenda<\/a> for Sustainable Development, which all countries had agreed to a decade ago.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>An A to Z of rights concerns<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>As is usual at the start of Council sessions, the High Commissioner highlighted situations of concern around the world, from Afghanistan \u2013 where the \u201cerasure\u201d of women and girls from public life \u201cis almost complete\u201d \u2013 to Haiti which is \u201cplunging deeper into lawlessness; Nigeria, which is seeing a resurgence of Boko Haram extremism; and Syria \u2013 whose transition to peace remains \u201cfragile\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In Ukraine, following the largest drone assault of the conflict, Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion \u201chas turned even more deadly\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In Sudan, besieged El Fasher is under constant bombardment and the risk of further atrocities remains, Mr. T\u00fcrk said, while in Myanmar, four years since the military coup, people remain caught up in \u201ca harrowing human rights calamity\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Turning to the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, \u201cdamning evidence\u201d indicates continued \u201cgrave violations and abuses\u201d by all parties to the conflict, the High Commissioner continued, while Gaza is now a \u201cgraveyard\u201d, amid Israel\u2019s \u201cmass killing\u201d of Palestinian civilians.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Where are steps to stop Gaza genocide?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201c<strong>We are failing the people of Gaza\u2026Where are the decisive steps to prevent genocide?\u201d<\/strong> he asked. \u201cWhy are countries not doing more to avert atrocity crimes? They must stop the flow to Israel of arms that risk violating the laws of war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Human Rights Council meets in three scheduled sessions every year at UN Geneva.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Continuing his <em>tour d\u2019horizon<\/em> of country situations of concern in addition to thematic issues, Mr. T\u00fcrk maintained that progress sought by his office, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/pages\/home.aspx\">OHCHR<\/a>, to protect the rights of Uyghur and other Muslim minorities in China has \u201cyet to materialise\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In West Africa, meanwhile, restrictions on LGBTQ+ people are growing in some countries considering criminalising consensual same-sex relations, the High Commissioner said, just as the rights of migrants and refugees are being increasingly violated.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Asylum alert<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cIran and Pakistan have forcibly returned millions of Afghans to their country and India has also deported groups of Rohingya Muslims by land and sea,\u201d he insisted.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, Germany, Greece, Hungary, and other European countries \u201chave also sought to limit the right to seek asylum\u201d, Mr. T\u00fcrk insisted. He took note of concerns about the United States\u2019 reported agreement with El Salvador, South Sudan, Eswatini, Rwanda and others, to deport third country nationals, and underlined Kuwait\u2019s decision to revoke citizenship for thousands of people in recent years, \u201cleaving many stateless\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Poll appeal<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On imminent national elections across Africa, Mr. T\u00fcrk also cited serious concerns over polling preparations in Cameroon, C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Malawi, Tanzania and Uganda.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn many of these countries, the authorities are resorting to harassment, exclusion or detention of opposition leaders; restrictions on media freedom; bans on peaceful protest; and crackdowns on human rights defenders,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The UN rights chief also urged the Ethiopian authorities to ensure conditions for free, fair and inclusive elections, amid concerns about arbitrary detentions of journalists.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the UN\u2019s efforts to improve and promote human rights everywhere, Mr. T\u00fcrk urged all countries to do more so that \u201cevery child \u2013 whether a future farmer, digital worker, doctor or shopkeeper\u201d understands that human rights \u201care our birthright\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cThe vast majority of people around the world are crying out for human rights and freedoms\u2026<strong>No one is safe when human rights are under attack.
