Trump\u2019s immigration crackdown, too, has injected new uncertainty into the broader farm labor force, around 40 percent of which has been made up of undocumented immigrants over the past three decades.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s chaotic agenda is taking a growing toll on American farmers, many of whom <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">backed<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> his return to office but are increasingly feeling the pressures of his unpredictable trade and deportation policies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not just the shock waves of Trump\u2019s trade war against much of the world that are hitting U.S. farmers hard, particularly in sectors that are highly dependent on trade with Chinese markets. Trump\u2019s immigration crackdown, too, has injected new uncertainty into the broader farm labor force, around <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40 percent<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of which<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been made up of undocumented immigrants over the past three decades.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. farmers are facing a \u201cvery difficult\u201d landscape, said Chris Barrett, an agricultural economist at Cornell University. \u201cThey\u2019re getting pinched on multiple sides.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For farmers in the United States, working in agriculture has long been a difficult business, no matter who is in office. In normal years, most farmers lose money on farming and must cross-subsidize those losses with other, nonfarm earnings, Barrett said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the addition of Trump\u2019s trade war and deportation crackdown is making business even harder for a group that was one of his <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/aug\/16\/farmers-trump-tariffs-climate-change\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">key voter bases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the recent U.S. presidential election and helped ensure his return to office. The number of <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-07-23\/america-small-farmers-are-hurting-with-trump-policies-loan-woes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">small-business bankruptcies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> filed by farmers and fishers recently surged to a five-year high, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bloomberg<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported, and the Department of Agriculture expects farm debt to reach a record high this year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis year is going to be tougher than most,\u201d Barrett said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s in large part because the Trump administration\u2019s policies are now squeezing both farmers\u2019 production costs and overseas markets. On the production side, Trump\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aggressive <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/abc7.com\/post\/12-million-immigrants-are-gone-us-labor-force-trump-preliminary-data\/17713052\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deportation drive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/08\/20\/nx-s1-5496668\/some-florida-farmers-reduce-crops-as-deportation-fears-drive-workers-away\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intensified uncertainty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the sector<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and driven away some <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/newsletters\/2025-06-20\/ice-crackdown-threatens-food-supply-as-undocumented-farm-workers-flee\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">workers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, compounding <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">labor challenges<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on farms.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The agricultural workforce in the United States is disproportionately dependent on immigrant labor\u2014both documented legal labor as well as undocumented workers,\u201d Barrett said. \u201cThe stemming of migrant inflows is really hurting.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The costs of fertilizer, a key agricultural input, have also <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-08-28\/tariffs-squeeze-trump-loving-farmers-as-fertilizer-prices-soar\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">soared<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, fueled in part by the uncertainty of Trump\u2019s tariff regime and strained supplies worldwide. Last month, one North American benchmark of fertilizer prices skyrocketed to its highest level in nearly a decade, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bloomberg<\/span> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-08-28\/tariffs-squeeze-trump-loving-farmers-as-fertilizer-prices-soar\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s an issue that Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley brought attention to last month as he called for lower tariffs on fertilizer. \u201cFertilizer input prices are at ALL TIME HIGH relative to the low low prices of grain,\u201d he wrote in a <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ChuckGrassley\/status\/1960117771477323875?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1960117771477323875%7Ctwgr%5Eff6aa6cf17fc5946822e4a4ba3d6ffd883ec503a%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bloomberg.com%2Fnews%2Farticles%2F2025-08-28%2Ftariffs-squeeze-trump-loving-farmers-as-fertilizer-prices-soar\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">post on X<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time that these production costs have risen, the prices of <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-08-29\/us-farmers-cut-spending-as-tariffs-cloud-outlook\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some major crops<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have remained low, adding even more financial pressures on farmers across the United States. For sectors that are heavily reliant on trade with the Chinese market, Trump\u2019s trade war is also making it harder for U.S. farmers to sell their products abroad.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take the U.S. soybean industry. China is one of the world\u2019s biggest soybean consumers, gobbling up more than <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/soygrowers.com\/news-releases\/soybeans-without-a-buyer-the-export-gap-hurting-u-s-farms\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">60 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the world\u2019s traded soybean supplies over the past five years, according to the American Soybean Association (ASA), making it a crucial market for U.S. farmers. After Trump unleashed his tariffs against much of the world, Beijing struck back by <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/09\/04\/business\/china-soybeans-trump-tariffs.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spurning U.S. soybeans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leaving U.S. farmers of the crop scrambling for a lifeline.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cChina is hitting back on something that they hope will get the attention of U.S. policymakers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d said Joseph Glauber, a former chief economist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture who is now at the International Food Policy Research Institute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. soybean farmers are starting to feel the pain of that decision. The fall harvest kicks off this month, but China still has yet to book any U.S. soybean purchases\u2014an unusual development that has sent shock waves through the sector. Typically by this time of the year, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.farmprogress.com\/soybean\/us-soybean-exports-to-china-plummet-alarming-farmers-as-harvest-begins\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nearly 40 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of soybean sales for the marketing year are already booked, according to Caleb Ragland, the president of the ASA.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSoybean farmers are under extreme financial stress,\u201d Ragland said in a <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/soygrowers.com\/news-releases\/asa-urges-president-trump-to-prioritize-china-trade-as-farmers-face-crisis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cU.S. soybean farmers cannot survive a prolonged trade dispute with our largest customer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No matter the industry, businesses and companies typically dislike political and trade uncertainty, which can complicate long-term planning. But that kind of uncertainty is especially disruptive in the U.S. agricultural sector, which is highly capital-intensive and requires immense investments in land, machinery, equipment, and other facilities, said Christopher Wolf, an agricultural economist at Cornell University.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s just harder to pull the trigger on those big long-term investments if you have these uncertainties that can impact the profitability of them,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During Trump\u2019s first term in office, the leader\u2019s trade war with China was <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">so devastating<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for U.S. farmers, and in particular the soybean sector, that his administration ultimately unveiled a massive <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-01-16\/farmers-renew-trump-support-in-iowa-caucus-despite-china-trade-war-fears?sref=gAQr8Hwd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$28 billion bailout<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help ease the pain. U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins has assured farmers that Trump is prepared to <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/04\/27\/farm-tariffs-bailout-trump-china\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bail them out again<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if necessary, but outside of a farmer subsidy package that will be rolled out over the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/aug\/16\/farmers-trump-tariffs-climate-change\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">next decade<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that scale of financial support has yet to be seen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But even if Trump does end up offering U.S. farmers another hefty bailout, some of the damage of his trade war may be hard to reverse in the long term. Global agricultural commodity markets are extremely competitive, and trade tensions have pushed many of U.S. farmers\u2019 longtime overseas markets to seek alternative suppliers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Trump\u2019s first trade war, U.S. soybean farmers lost considerable market share to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brazil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014another major producer\u2014which they still have not been able to claw back. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOnce a buyer has an established, reliable contractor, a reliable supplier offering high-quality product on time at a competitive price, they\u2019re loath to start looking again,\u201d Barrett said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s an \u201cespecially worrisome\u201d time for those in the farm sector and in rural America, Barrett said.
