Black history is American history. <\/p>\n
The National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) faces possible loss of federal funding after being targeted by a Trump administration executive order 14253, also called \u201cRestoring Truth and Sanity to American History.\u201d America\u2019s History SOS (Save Our Smithsonian), an advocacy group founded by a collective of Black lawyers, is <\/span>leading the effort<\/span> to stop the order.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The Save Our Smithsonian organization has launched a petition urging supporters to demand a halt to the executive order, which instructs Vice President J.D. Vance to ensure the Smithsonian Institution\u2019s exhibits align with what they define as \u201cAmerican Greatness.\u201d The order <\/span>mandates the review<\/span><\/a> and removal of exhibits that would \u201cdivide Americans based on race,\u201d \u201cdegrade shared American values,\u201d or are \u201canti-American.<\/span><\/p>\n In the petition, organizers criticize the Trump administration\u2019s definition of \u201cAmerican greatness,\u201d which they say seeks to e<\/span>rase Black Americans\u2019 stories<\/span><\/a> and contributions to history.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe National Museum of African American History and Culture was established to tell the truth of African American history\u2014the struggles, the triumphs, and the countless contributions African Americans have made to the United States of America. For generations, Americans of all backgrounds fought to establish the Museum\u2014not only to honor the history and contributions of African Americans, but out of a deep conviction that the nation must reckon with its past and finally honor and acknowledge the truth,\u201c the Change.org petition reads.<\/span><\/p>\n Save Our Smithsonian organizers say the executive order attempts to<\/span> rewrite history <\/span><\/a>and erase the history of slavery, discrimination, and violence brought against Black people in America.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWhitewashing this shared history isn\u2019t just an attack on the Museum\u2019s integrity\u2014it\u2019s an assault on America\u2019s collective memory.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The petition <\/span>calls on the president<\/span> to rescind Executive Order 14253 and urges that NMAAHC and the Smithsonian stay free from political influence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Soon after its release in March 2025, Congressional Black Caucus <\/span>Chair Yvette D. Clark <\/span>condemned the order<\/span><\/a>, calling it \u2018blatantly racist.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThere is nothing divisive or improper about telling the truth. We detest this administration\u2019s dedication to whitewashing our nation\u2019s history.
