Nearly two and a half years ago — a $37.75 million contract brought Saquon Barkley to Philadelphia. Although Barkley did not bring a championship with him to Philly — he did bring with him talent at the position than the Eagles had not seen in nearly a decade. And he well knew that his mere prescence and abundance of talent would provide the opportunity to take a team more than capable of winning a championship to the second win for the franchise in the past decade.
This week — Saquon Barkley gave advice to NBA free-agent LeBron James to potentially join the Sixers while at a Youth Football event at Haddonfield Memorial High School. The pitch wasn’t a chance to be famous in Philly as James is already one of the most famous people on the planet. Rather — it was the chance to be remembered forever.
What Lebron James would bring to Philadelphia is not only the chance to make the Sixers a contender. He would bring an impressive resume from perhaps the best to ever play the game. The last piece needed not only to contend — but to bring the Sixers their first NBA Championship since 1983.
And we’ve been here before.
In the summer of 2018 — Lebron nearly joined the 76ers during the Process 2.0. We’ll never know how a younger Embiid, Ben Simmons, and Lebron would have elevated Philadelphia. But perhaps it’s not too late.
Adding James to the Sixers — is an all-in bet alongside free-agent acquisition Jaylen Brown to go for a Championship now instead of writing yet another chapter in The Process. What the pairing of a roster that previously could not get out of the second round of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals with perhaps the greatest player of the modern age with four championship experiences — could mean for a team that hasn’t won a trophy in nearly 43 years. Especially from the stars of it’s cross-parking lot neighbor — another Philly team who just won a championship not seventeen months ago.
After nine months — the investment paid off as his talent had helped to secure that Eagles’ second Lombardi Trophy in franchise history. Whether Barkley is remembered as one of the greatest NFL running backs ever — and whether or not the Eagles win two more Super Bowls with Saquon on the roster or no more — number 26 will be remembered forever in Philly.
Two weeks from now — Saquon Barkley will report with nearly 100 other Eagles players to Training Camp at the Novacare Complex. But unlike the half of those players needing to prove themselves to make the roster — Saquon Barkley has cemented himself as one of the focal points of an offense attempting to add one more championship to the Novacare Complex and the chance to be once again remembered forever.
Lebron has that same chance. If he becomes a 76er, that is.
