You and I Are Polar Opposites Voice Actors Love Taira & Azuma

The You and I Are Polar Opposites anime, which won over audiences all over the world with its three adorable couples, is back with the currently airing second season after a successful first-season run. At the heart of the story is how Suzuki’s and Tani’s attraction for each other blossomed into a relationship despite how different they are in personality. This resulted in a love story of adorable interactions and a rom-com that grabbed audiences by the heart. At Anime Expo 2026, Anime Trending interviewed Sayumi Suzushiro and Shogo Sakata, the voice actors of Suzuki and Tani, respectively.

Despite the fact that they’re polar opposites, Suzuki and Tani are very open with each other about their feelings and are very adept at communicating with each other. Why do you think that is?

Sayumi Suzushiro: It’s because of love! [laughs] But also, they’re considerate to each other. They value each other as romantic partners and as individuals.

Shogo Sakata: It’s because they’re complete opposites that they respect each other’s differences. Add to the fact that they care so much for each other, they have a strong desire to get to know each other, which moves their communication smoothly.

What is your favorite doki-doki moment in the show, and why is that your favorite?

Sayumi Suzushiro: There were a lot of exciting moments in the first season, but for me, the confession scene — screaming “I love you” from the bridge over the street is my favorite. When you finally confess your feelings after letting your affection build up for so long, it becomes a double dose of emotions: the love you feel and the nervous tension. Then, it hits the absolute peak, like when Suzuki was at the peak on the bridge.

Shogo Sakata: For me, it’s the summer festival scene in Episode 4, where Suzuki was about to drop her phone and Tani picked it up from the other side, and their faces got really close. Although it’s around their third or fourth date, it’s one of the first moments where they get physically close to each other. I like the atmosphere of that moment — that silence, that feeling of, “What are we going to do from here?” It’s almost like time stood still. That was a moment that just left me breathless.

Going into Season 2, what’s different between the seasons?

Sayumi Suzushiro: The heavy focus in Season 1 is on Suzuki and Tani, but since they’ve been dating for a while, there are new worries for Suzuki and Tani as a couple. They’re also stepping into the role of “couple senpai”—their mindset begins to shift as the couple with the most experience. In Season 2, there’s more focus on the development of relationships between the other characters, and Suzuki and Tani are instead looking over them.

Shogo Sakata: They’ve been dating since Season 1 and have spent a lot of time together, so in Season 2, they’ve grown more comfortable with each other. They also have talks about the future — topics you can only have when you’re dating as students. For example, what to expect after graduation. As a whole, there are aspects to their relationship that are more serious than Season 1, which you’ll see with how they move forward in their relationship. They also experience moments of not being on the same page.

Suzushiro-san, Suzuki is very animated and makes all kinds of noises. What is it like to voice a character who loves talking and has so much expression?

Sayumi Suzushiro: I don’t think of Suzuki as your typical rom-com heroine. She has a lot of different sides to her, and she’s a character I took on all kinds of vocal challenges with. What I value most is that she’s very delicate on the inside. She’s very self-aware, always reading the room, and conscious of other dynamics around her, so I think it’s important to consider what she’s actually thinking. It’s not just about being lively for Suzuki. She’s actively working to energize others around her. There are certain changes in her voice when she’s moved or feeling something toward Tani. I tried to channel all of that — the vibes, the emotion, the energy — into the character.

Shogo Sakata, despite the fact that Tani feels more emotionless, especially when compared to Suzuki, the audience can still hear how much he loves her when he talks to her. What is it like to voice a character who’s clearly in love but can sound very muted, and how do you go about perfecting his character?

Shogo Sakata: First, I wanted to take care of the fact that Tani’s character is inseparable from who he is. I didn’t want to make him too sweet, and I didn’t want to lean too heavily into the tropes of shojo manga for romantic leads. To convey a true-to-life Tani-kun, I made sure to carefully articulate his emotional shifts and to emphasize the things he wanted to convey. I also wanted to express the cadence in which he speaks and the rhythm — the timing of how he speaks, where he’d pause, and when he’d be silent as examples.

What are you most looking forward to in Season 2 that you would like the fans to watch out for?

Sayumi Suzushiro: As for Suzuki and Tani, their relationship has deepened over time, so keep an eye on the dynamic between them. Also, since actual time has passed in their school lives, you can really enjoy the youthful aspects — the fun of high school events and the bittersweet feeling of them coming to an end. It covers various school functions and the looming issue of entrance exams.

Shogo Sakata: Season 2 covers the story all the way to the end of the original work, so it’s great to be able to enjoy the whole thing through to its conclusion. When I read the final volume of the manga myself, I thought I was going to cry. There’s that feeling of loneliness once you finish reading, but also warmth. I’m really looking forward to experiencing that again. Personally, I also like Tairazuma, so I’m looking forward to more of their interactions, too.

You and I Are Polar Opposites Season 2 is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
