Apparently, overtaking the likes of The Exorcist and Sinners wasn’t enough for Curry Barker’s Obsession.
This past weekend saw the movie cross a staggering total gross of $403 million at the worldwide box-office.
However, this most recent weekend did see a considerable drop in Obsession’s almost-constant profits. Previously remaining easily within the box-office top three, Obsession slipped to number six during the July 4th holiday weekend.
Of course, this is to be expected when facing competition from the likes of Minions and Toy Story.
But we must remember, Obsession was an indie movie, made for just $750,000. Making around 400 times its budget undoubtedly makes Barker’s movie one of the most profitable horror films of all time.
It’s likely safe to say Focus Features won’t mind Obsession quietly ending its run of box-office dominance after eight glorious weeks. As it stands, Obsession is now the world record holder for the most profitable film with a budget under $1 million.
Available to watch at home, and due to hit physical media in the coming weeks, we have no doubt the movie will continue to rake in the cash.
So, although Focus Features invested a sizeable $15 million to purchase the film, Obsession has clearly proved a fruitful endeavour.
Hopefully, this is the start of a long and equally fruitful career for filmmaker Curry Barker.
Stay tuned for further box-office roundups.
