Woman official alleges abuse, assault during voter survey in Telangana

Police in Telangana’s Kamareddy district have registered a case after a 42-year-old woman Booth Level Officer alleged that three people, including two women, stopped her from doing her official work, abused her and assaulted her during house-to-house voter enumeration. Police said on Sunday that an investigation is under way.

In her complaint, the government official said the incident took place on July 10 while she was carrying out voter enumeration. She alleged that during the exercise, two women approached her and submitted an Enumeration Form, and a dispute broke out when she refused to accept it after finding that it did not have a photograph affixed.

According to the complaint, when she pointed out that the form did not have a photograph, one of the women allegedly told her that she “belonged to Bangladesh and therefore would not affix her photograph”. The BLO then refused to accept the form. The complainant alleged that the two women then “obstructed her from discharge her official duties, abusing and pushing her”.

She further alleged that a man later arrived at the spot, questioned her for rejecting the form by referring to Bangladesh, and threatened to kill her if she did not accept it. During the altercation, the accused allegedly snatched her mobile phone, damaged it, and abused and assaulted her, the complaint said.

Police said a case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Asked whether the woman who submitted the form was a Bangladeshi, as alleged in the complaint, a police official said she is an Indian. The house-to-house enumeration for the SIR began in Telangana on June 25 and will continue till July 24.
