Grab your top-of-the-line boom stick at S-Mart and avoid reading any skin-bound ancient Sumerian books, because those Deadite maniacs are at it again with Evil Dead Burn in theaters July 10th!
Ok…so I’m a massive Evil Dead fan. While I do have my favorites, all Evil Dead is good Evil Dead in my non-skin-bound book– so you could say I’m chomping at the bit for this brand-spanking-new installment.
In a climate where studios choose to regurgitate the same bile and diminish their franchises with oversaturated, hollow projects, the franchise has consistently found unique ways to stay fresh and entertaining while remaining true to what made it special in the first place—buckets of blood and goo, deep-rooted connective lore, and dark comedy—plus a classic Raimi Dutch angles and a demon POV shot never hurt.
The bones are all there for this new installment, produced by our unholy trinity, Sam Raimi (Spider-Man, Darkman), Bruce Campbell (Army of Darkness, Bubba Ho-Tep), and Rob Tapert (Evil Dead). At the helm, French director Sébastien Vanicek (Infested) makes his first American studio film and confirms he had to trim an ultra-brutal scene from Burn to avoid the “box office death sentence” of an NC-17 rating, though if the popular Terrifier franchise has taught us anything, it might be that it is a tad antiquated in the horror-fan realm at this point. If anything, the strong rating might have garnered publicity and helped usher in the Deadite droves.
Following 2013’s soft reboot and 2023’s Rise, Evil Dead Burn marks the third standalone installment, which seems to continue leaning toward a more modern “James Wan-esque” horror in both visual tone and intense storylines. I’m not going to lie: I do miss Raimi’s more zany slapstick horror-comedy, packed with the goony plotlines of the original three movies and the hilarious series. But beggars can’t be choosers, so let’s get back to business.
If you’re a returning Evil Dead fan or just dipping your toes into this beloved franchise, our anti-hero, lord and savior of the Evil Dead universe, Bruce Campbell, recently posted on X, “If you’ve never seen an Evil Dead movie before, you might want to practice before seeing this one.” And that’s a good enough excuse for me to have some fun sharing my Top Evil Dead Scariest Moments.
