A while back, we reported that Evil Dead legend Bruce Campbell had been diagnosed with cancer.
In a lengthy Instagram post, the star described his condition as “treatable, but not curable,” and stated his intention to slow his career and focus on treatment.
Despite the grim news, Campbell hoped to be well enough to promote the film Emma and Ernie, and many genre fans hoped he’d gather enough strength to return one last time as Ash Williams.
However, we’re very sad to report that Campbell has closed that chapter of his career, and has no intention of returning to the Evil Dead franchise.
Whilst promoting Emma and Ernie, the topic of Campbell’s future in the franchise inevitably came up.
Campbell quickly made his stance clear, saying:
“This is a big pivot from what I normally do. I’m not interested in boomsticks and chainsaws anymore. No one has been covered in fake blood more than me.”
Campbell further elaborated that, upon taking stock of his career, he concluded he’d like to be remembered for more than just The Evil Dead:
“I’ve started so many days face down, on a dirt floor, covered in mud. And I’m like, is this it? This is on my tombstone? “The Evil Dead guy?”
So, unfortunately, Campbell’s words shatter the hopes of fans that the actor will cameo in Evil Dead Burn, or the upcoming series prequel Evil Dead Wrath.
However, Campbell likely has bigger fish to fry, given his cancer fight, and his choice to retire the character of Ash should be respected.
We sure will miss him, though. Stay groovy Ash, and we wish Bruce all the best during his cancer journey.
