Almost four years after the announcement of a new Sword Art Online original anime film, we now have a 2028 release date and a title: Sword Art Online – Integral Domain –.
The new movie, which is set after the “Alicization Arc,” is directed by Lycoris Recoil‘s Shingo Adachi, who was previously involved in the Sword Art Online franchise as a character designer. The character designer for Sword Art Online – Integral Domain –. is Yumiko Yamamoto (Lycoris Recoil sub-character designer, Sword Art Online Alicization War of Underworld co-character designer), who drew its teaser visual.

Credited for animation production is A-1 Pictures and its new Psyde Kick Studio label.
Sword Art Online – Integral Domain – will be the franchise’s second theatrical film to feature an original story, after 2017’s Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale. The other previous Sword Art Online movies were 2014’s Sword Art Online: Extra Edition compilation movie, 2021’s Sword Art Online the Movie -Progressive- Aria of a Starless Night, and 2023’s Sword Art Online the Movie -Progressive- Scherzo of Deep Night.
The popular Sword Art Online franchise originated as a web novel published on author Reki Kawahara’s (Accel World, Demons’ Crest) website. The light novel series, which is published under KADOKAWA’s Dengeki Bunko label, began in 2009 and has 29 volumes as of April 2026. Its premise involves immersive virtual reality games in what was then the near future, with the first arc seeing main characters Kirito and Asuna becoming trapped in the titular Sword Art Online when its creator turns it into a death game.
2012 saw the start of premiere of the first Sword Art Online TV anime, which was followed by Sword Art Online II, Sword Art Online Alicization, and Sword Art Online Alicization War of Underworld.
The franchise includes manga, the Sword Art Online Progressive series that retells the “Aincrad Arc” (which was originally wrapped up in the first volume, ignoring side stories), spin-offs like Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online (which inspired two anime seasons), and video games. Its latest anime is Unanswered//butterfly, created as promotional material for this month’s Echoes of Aincrad action RPG.
Before Sword Art Online – Integral Domain – arrives in Japanese theaters, Adachi will be featured in the credits of the new Takayuki Hirao (Pompo the Cinephile, The Garden of Sinners: Paradox Spiral) x CLAP film Wasted Chef as its main character designer. Adachi was also recently involved with some of the episodes in Lycoris Recoil: Friends are thieves of time, a series of shorts that is a separate production from the new Lycoris Recoil project announced in 2023.
