ZUTOMAYO has released an animated music video for “Fig Smoke,” the opening song for the upcoming Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You TV anime.
The animation is produced by bees inc., with the studio’s G-ko (director of ZUTOMAYO’s “ultra tamashi” music video and the “Orbital Resonance” music video) serving as director, storyboard artist, and unit director. Fellow bees inc. member Yutaka Kinutani (“ultra tamashi”) provided the character designs and animation direction.
Among the other names involved with the music video include buōy as background art director and bees inc.’s Joko Manato as compositing director.
“Fig Smoke” debuted on streaming and download at the same time as the video’s release. Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You will begin airing on July 9 following the early release of its first six episodes last month.
Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You is an adaptation of the Square Enix-published manga by Jinushi. Manga UP! Global describes the manga’s synopsis as such:
Meet Sasaki, an overworked, middle-aged office worker. His days are marked only by the passing of more unrewarding corporate drudgery. Smoking helps take the edge off, but other than that, the only bright spot of his day is when he goes to the nearby supermarket and sees Yamada’s smiling face. So, one evening after yet another exhausting day, he heads to the supermarket to find he missed Yamada’s shift. Dejected, he decides to go find a smoking area but discovers there isn’t one to be found. Just as he’s about to leave, a girl in a biker jacket named Tayama asks him to join her at a secret smoking area!
Masato Suzuki (Gushing Over Magical Girls, the upcoming Dara-san of Reiwa) and Aoi Mori are directing the anime at Asahi Production. Takuya Sato and Seena Hoshiki are voicing the lead characters Sasaki and Yamada/Tayama, respectively.
